Re: Help collecting pictures of CPU and PPU packages

Fiskbit wrote: Tue Sep 27, 2022 4:29 pm I feel like I'm missing something here. Nintendo used heatspreaders like this on many PPUs, with the chip name stamped into the metal. Attached is an image from Lockster (cropped down a bit to fit on the forum) with B and D examples.
And now I feel very silly. Thanks for enlightening me.

Re: Help collecting pictures of CPU and PPU packages

I'm honestly not even sure what to make of that. Just looks bizarre to me. Yeah, it's strange! The owner of pc-10.com recently mentioned to me that he's also seen several chips like this before. Excuse my ignorance, but could it be possible that it's some sort of factory sample that somehow got out?

Re: Help collecting pictures of CPU and PPU packages

A photo of a "2C02E" chip with a flat aluminum plate laminated to the top. The chip marking "2C02E" is stamped into the aluminum plate and there is no lot code; one corner of the plate is angled to indicate the orientation / pin 1. On the underside there are two somewhat larger-...

Re: Help collecting pictures of CPU and PPU packages

Yes, both genuine (RP) and clone (UA) chips are very commonly re-surfaced and re-marked via Chinese gray market channels. The re-marking is usually done with laser engraving while the original markings were usually done with white ink printing. I'm not sure if this is a failsafe test because I do h...

Re: Help dumping a SNES indie cart

I think "isn't unheard of" is an understatement, a good portion of the SNES's library was under 4mib in fact.

Out of curiosity, have you tried both your dump and the downloaded ROM in bsnes?

Re: SNES clone chips (TCT-97*)

Certain SNES games, such as Final Fight 2, were hacked into arcade-friendly versions and bootlegged as arcade machines (this also happened to Megadrive games such as Street Fighter 2, Aladdin and Sonic 3). As far as I know, these machines predate the common SNES clone chips such as the TCT-97* line....

Can you change the tilemap address mid-screen and use some other portion of VRAM for the HUD to avoid conflicts caused by scrolling?
Doesn't Super Mario World do this?

Rilden wrote: Sun Sep 18, 2022 2:51 am Can't the other tools do that already?
What I think they're suggesting would be useful for generating NES images. I don't think they mean quantising a whole image to a preset palette without the tile and palette stuff your tool already does, as many tools for that of course already exist.

Re: Hud

That depends on the specifics of your game, what graphics mode you're planning to use, how much/what items you want to display on the HUD etc, there isn't a catch-all answer to this question. We need more details to be able to answer this properly.

Re: Question about green tint on Dendy region

There are almost no clones of Nintendo's 2A07/2C07 - they're largely useless because they're not very compatible with preexisting 2A03/2C02 software. I mean, they would be useful in countries where official PAL NES software was already widespread, but clones weren't as available in those countries ...

Re: Question about green tint on Dendy region

Here's a possibility that just came to mind: We know that there was a significant market for modded NTSC Famicoms in Hong Kong, using chips like the "MK5060" to convert a standard NTSC deck to PAL-B color and timing. Perhaps these games were designed to run on these specific consoles? The...

The last of all of those. See what weird things we discover when we actually start aggregating this? All I know is that I really appreciate work like this. I have an odd fascination with obscure variants of computer hardware and software and other sorts of "computer archaeology" so this t...

Re: Help collecting pictures of CPU and PPU packages

Wait... just saw the 2 A 02 on the PPU page? What's that all about? Is it a prototype, and why is it on the PPU page? I also see on the CPU page there's a "2A03E" but without the RP/Ricoh branding, and the description mentions this 2A02, so I suppose these are clones or clone-adjacent, but...
