Re: Optimizing the usage of character-related data
Not much can be done. I usually just do the array access, and to avoid constant loads, don't use the X/Y reg for any computation.

If you're that curious about why they used it, ask them. It's not like the production team is dead yet.

There are no tricks to affect a single sprite like that. It's all faked by CHR.

Some libraries offer thermal cameras for loan, and I hear you can use a digital camera with an IR filter as a cheap make-do version of one.

CD quality also matters. I've found many car players just don't accept cheap CDs, but quality CDs with the exact same burner and settings work. If you're on Linux, cdrecord can print a CD's quality (what the manufacturer specified in the details area).

Oh, a new option *checks*. Their MBC3 carts use donor chips, but others are new. The prices however are nonviable (50$ CIB for a game can't have 30$ go to the board and case; even less so for cart only).

Why is NES more popular for homebrew than GB? Tools: NES has far more tools. This is a positive loop with popularity. One tool in particular is important, a C compiler. NES has had a decent C compiler for years, while the GB side situation has been bad (though seems to be improving recently). Distri...

They're quite good. The only comment I have is that most of them are very busy (meaning both very fast tempo and busy melodies). This makes them a bit unsuited for game bg music, they take too much attention, bg music is not supposed to be the #1 thing you're focusing on.

Start with the nesdoug tutorials. They are modern and target C, the old nerdy nights is both archaic and asm.
