Yeah Yeah Beebiss II

John Riggs made a fan sequel to Bandai's Famicom game Family Trainer: Rai Rai Kyonshis - Baby Kyonshi no Amida Daibouken. It's a single-screen action platformer called Yeah Yeah Beebiss II. The backgrounds make good use of black, which is the NES's strong suit. There aren't raster effects (though th...

Grand Theft Auto 5 played through a GB

Someone went and did it, implementing what I've called the "TV tuner" method (and others have called "reverse emulating") to play Grand Theft Auto 5 on a PlayStation console, using a custom cartridge in an unmodified Game Boy system as input and display. Video: "Playing GTA5...

Re: Commodore 64 external hardware acceleration of smooth scrolling?

If the column and row addresses are exchanged such that bytes with consecutive addresses are in different rows of the DRAM chip, then reading as many consecutive bytes from RAM as there are rows will refresh everything.

MMC1A fixed bank behavior difference

On MMC1A (mapper 155), setting $E000 bit 4 causes causes bit 3 to bypass the fixed bank logic and go straight to the mapper's PRG ROM A17 output. MMC1B, the common revision of the MMC1 mapper, uses bit 4 of $E000 as a PRG RAM disable bit. MMC1A, an earlier revision, does not disable PRG RAM in respo...

Re: Back!

forums.nesdev.org uses a 301 permanent redirect from HTTP to HTTPS and gets an A from Qualys SSL Labs for not supporting versions of TLS prior to 1.2. I've emailed Nocash via the (obfuscated) address on his website to ask if he can still see it.

Re: Understanding how the Zapper works

I don't have an FDS on which to test. What I do have is a PowerPak that takes UNROM, and it's fairly straightforward to hack Zap Ruder or any other NROM-128 or NROM-256 game to use UNROM. I also have 240p Test Suite, which contains a subset of the Zapper test and is built for UNROM.

Re: Looks like NESCartDB is down (again)...

RAR and UTF-16 have caused hassles for me and may be likewise for others. I had to install unrar-free to decompress the RAR so that I could use iconv to translate it from UTF-16LE to UTF-8, which is more commonly used on the Internet. The result after Zip compression ended up smaller than the origin...

Re: Commodore 64 external hardware acceleration of smooth scrolling?

CRTCs used in CoCo and IBM CGA have an explicit row offset setting, which controls the distance in bytes from the start of one row of tilemap to the start of the next. Speculation: I imagine some old 8-bit home computers with unified memory don't attempt variable display pitch because they (ab)use t...

Re: Record video from Mesen successfully?

Use Mesen to record to AVI using whatever codecs it supports. Then use FFmpeg to transcode to a container and codec in wider current use on the Internet, such as the WebM stack or the MPEG-4 stack. If you need help with specific tasks at FFmpeg's command line, such as pixel doubling to work around Y...

Re: Change my username?

My first guess is that I come off as serious in an asynchronous medium, such as forums and issue trackers, and as goofy in a synchronous medium, such as IRC or Discord. (For what these mean, see "Why Slack is inappropriate for open source communications" by Dave Cheney.)

How to turn off Four Score on AVS?

I am developing an NES game with a control mapping for the standard NES controller and a control mapping for the Super NES Controller. The game detects a Super NES controller if the thirteenth through sixteenth bits read from $4016 are 0 and the seventeenth through twenty-fourth bits are 1. The latt...

I'm presuming that it has nothing to do with a TV series by AMC about making and selling methamphetamine whose logo alludes to the elements Bromine and Barium.

Re: Pixel editors at unusual ratios (such as 9:8)

Once I made a background graphics editor that runs directly on an NES. https://GitHub.com/pinobatch/nesbgeditor

Or you can use GIMP, turn off "Dot for Dot" in the View menu, and set the image's resolution to 63x72 dots per inch in Print Size.
