Re: Mesen - Emulator

For comparison:
Years ago on Pocket Heaven, I said something similar about PocketNES, an NES emulator for GBA. I would accidentally bump L or R, causing the screen to scroll. Other members told me I was holding it wrong.

Re: Mesen - Emulator

For NES I'd also suggest an additional "view attribute in memory viewer" right click menu option to find that byte, too. On the other platforms I don't think they're stored apart like NES, though. Another platform with attributes "stored apart" would be Game Boy Color, which sto...

Re: NES Cart DB Database.

I don't know where to get the latest XML database. I know where to get a copy of the XML database from a few years ago, if that's good enough for your use case. I attached it to this post.

Re: Living without a personal smartphone

The drawbacks are just small compared to the advantages it will give you so living without smartphone is an inconvenience to many. Most of your list except "Emergency" and "AI" can be done with a Wi-Fi-only tablet or on a phone with no SIM. A landline can do "Emergency"...

Re: Mega Duck

Mega Duck's system on chip is a clone of the Game Boy's, with the same Sharp SM83 CPU core. There are two technical differences other than the cartridge port pinout: 1. Most registers have different addresses. 2. There's no boot ROM; the program starts at rst $00 like on SMS. SameDuck is a Mega Duck...

Re: Are there any games that use the MGB bootrom handoff value?

Tetris DX loads different borders for Super Game Boy (which return $01 like DMG) and the Japan-only Super Game Boy 2 (which returns $FF like MGB). 144p Test Suite displays one of four strings in the lower right corner of the main menu depending on which pre-GBC model is in use: "GB", &quo...

When I posted the original topic, the forum was at http://nesdev.parodius.com/bbs , under the scheme HTTP, not HTTPS. Since then, the forum has moved to https://forums.nesdev.org , under the scheme HTTPS, and Firefox 93 released in October 2021 changed download behavior to add a roadblock when a doc...

Re: SNES Doom Source Released! Now What?

One way to work around the color depth limit of the Dread technique is to reserve about 12 colors for the half-and-half trick and the rest of the colors for lower-contrast areas of a texture that don't need to be as high resolution. Then have your texture converter use half-and-half tiles for detail...

Re: Mesen - Emulator

As Microsoft used to tell the Firefox team: "Congratulations on shipping!" Things I noticed that are improvements: 1. MUCH faster than Winforms-based Mesen. Things I noticed that may need investigation: 1. Help > Report a bug points to a 404 (you may want to change this once a new site goe...

Tall Pixel for Super NES is also available. This uses the S-PPU's interlaced mode to make 1-and-2 vs. 2-and-1 more stable.

Re: SNES Doom Source Released! Now What?

Another option: a 112x112 tilemap canvas, stretched vertically by 50%. A trick described in the video The Making of Dread , episode 8 "Total Graphics Replacement" , at 7:30 through 11:00, lets you draw 112 columns that look like 224 pixels. Put the canvas in the tilemap. Each byte drawn to...

Re: I have Stupid questions about the vblank signal off the DMG's lcd

I agree that FreeSync aka VESA Adaptive Sync is probably the least bad way to accommodate this timing quirk of the Game Boy LCD. Then as a fallback for monitors without FreeSync, you could implement a full frame buffer and display "For less lag, use a FreeSync monitor" on the upscaler's OS...

Living without a personal smartphone

Regarding a previous conversation about not wanting to have a smartphone : A lot of what can be done with a personal smartphone can also be done in other ways. Some of these ways have drawbacks, which may or may not be deal breakers for particular people. In my case, these drawbacks have led me not ...
