Yes, that's true; it isn't reproduced in FCE Ultra, so I was a little surprised when I first played FF on a cart. I'm not sure that it wouldn't work on PAL, though, and even if it didn't that's only one minor special effect whose absence went completely unnoticed by me. Hmm.

Well there's nothing bastardly about wanting to be paid for your work, but if you feel like making available to all that's certainly magnanimous of you =)

FF won't work on a PAL NES? That's a surprise; I never thought of it as high-performance enough to be affected by PAL/NTSC differences.

Were I to get into this I'd go more along the lines of the early-90s shareware model, putting a demo ROM (but a full-featured demo that actually gives you an idea of what the game's like) on the Internet and selling the complete game in cartridge-only form, and include a notice with the cart that ex...

Hmm, I like the idea of a clear NES cart quite a bit. How much cheaper is resin casting compared to injection molding?

Well, yes, there are certainly a number of heavily mass-produced NES carts nobody would miss a few of, but as has been pointed out, a custom-made cartridge case could be much simpler - all it really needs is the four main sides, the bevels on the bottom corners, the four sides of the edge-protector ...

Yes, it could be better (and in the 65816 incarnation, it is =) but it's still my favorite.

Well, the 65C02 can be had new from WDC for $5. Zilog doesn't seem to put prices on their site, but I believe the Z80 in a vanilla-processor version goes for ~$7. Also, yes, the 6502 does have INY and INX (and DEY and DEX.) Amusingly, it doesn't have INC A or DEC A (though I believe the C02 adds thi...

On the topic of Gamegear vs. SMS, I haven't noticed the reputed horrible video quality of the SMS on my GG. (It's still not that awesome, but it's not anywhere near as bad as the screenshots Chris posted.)

The advantages I can think of that the NES has over the SMS are: * Better support for hardware expansion (i.e. the sound-in pins on the Famicom) * A significantly nicer sound chip * The 6502 (I agree that the Z80 is just confusing) * Slightly nicer sprite handling (flipping support) Other than that,...

Well, it is an original game, as far as I can tell; it just borrows Zelda's graphics and the FF name.

I'm not aware of anything that would make an NSF undumpable unless the music changed in response to the game state. The reason some SNES games are undumpable is that they update the music via the 65816, which the SPC format doesn't emulate.

The problem I see with the idea of a miniNSF format is that NSFs are already about as "mini" as they will ever need to be. The big reason for miniPSF's existence, as I see it, is so that instruments from individual files can be shared across an entire game soundtrack; on sample-based conso...

That "Final Fantasy" screen is from an unlicensed Chinese cart that goes by "Final Fantasy V" on ROM databases. The only thing I can tell you about it is that it's a Union Bound game and the in-game graphics are largely ripped from the GBC Zelda games. The Djinn one is intriguing...

Actually, there's an archive of commercial game NSFs somewhere (I can't remember where) which has Zeruda No Densetsu.

Darn it, none of the good events happen anywhere near me. Even if it was in Minneapolis or Duluth I'd go, but no, it's in freaking NEW YORK. =/
