Re: Tokyo retro game stores report, autumn 2014

Crap games with crap mappers or crap games with interesting mappers? I'm not hardcore enough to have memorized the mapper list for every Famicom game ever released. And I wouldn't know which ones are considered interesting anyway. Short answer: I don't know. Did this purchase give you euphoria? I a...

Tokyo retro game stores report, autumn 2014

I recently returned from a week-long stay in Tokyo. Naturally one of the things I did was to check out some of the retro game stores Tokyo has to offer, so I thought I'd post some up-to-date (as of early August 2014) comments about the stores I visited in case anyone else here is going to Tokyo soon...

Re: Music Tools

A proper release of the Paragon 5 tracker (with export support and playback routines) was made today. The tracker itself appears to run on Windows, OSX and Linux (including Raspbian).

Re: Price of used NES hardware

I think this is a problem everywhere. Here in Sweden I've seen prices for PAL-B (i.e. Scandinavian) games and consoles increase _a lot_ over the years. Just some examples that I saw today on a Swedish auction site: An unboxed copy of Megaman 2 for the NES: $80 A boxed copy of Wild Guns for the SNES:...

Re: PVsneslib Layer problem - SNES JUKEBOX

Bit 13 of each BG map entry is a priority bit. Try using a low prio (0) for the BG0 and BG1 tiles, and a high priority for the BG2 tiles (if you're using mode 2, 4 or 6 the priority bit for BG2 has a different meaning). If you're using display mode 1 there's also a BG2 priority setting in bit 3 of B...

Re: SEGA 32X NSF player

Synchronizing the FM register writes with the PCM data for the other channels could be a bit tricky, but might be doable. I'm not sure how many NSFs there are out there that only use the VRC7 and no other expansion audio chips.

Re: SEGA 32X NSF player

I was expecting the NSF to sound weird on the Genesis/32X sound chip but it sound pretty good! It's PCM, so it's really no different from how you would generate the audio on a PC (other than the fact that the 32X has variable sample resolution which decreases as the sample rate increases). The Gene...

Re: Back in the old days...

Ah, NESticle. That made me think of this piece of gold from Zophar's "Lamest mailbox": Hello, this is a question. you do nots think to make a SNESTLICLE or think to make it? if make it make please it but that they could so that run to a speed 100 % in a pentium to 133 MHz with 16MB of RAM,...

Re: SEGA 32X NSF player

I don't know, this lack of originality makes it look like a boring platform to develop for. That was just a shallow comparison of performance and capabilities. There are obviously differences. Not that many old PCs had dual CPUs, for example. This mixing is analog though, right? With cables carryin...

Re: SEGA 32X NSF player

There's also a Wolf3D port for the plain old Genesis. From a gamer's perspective the 32X is little else than an expensive paper weight. The few games that were made for it were mostly rubbish. But for someone who likes to develop for old video game consoles it's a pretty nice system, reminiscent of ...

Re: Does anyone create homebrew for systems other than NES?

Yes, I've created things for probably at least 15 different video game consoles and home computers (ranging from the ColecoVision to the Wii). I tend to limit myself to relatively small projects that I know I can get up and running in a matter of weeks, and where I won't have to create a lot of asse...

SEGA 32X NSF player

I thought I'd mention this here, since it's both NES-related and "Other retro dev"-related: I've recently released an NSF player for the SEGA 32X. For those of you thinking "the 32-what-now?" , the 32X was an add-on for the Megadrive/Genesis containing dual Super-H2 CPUs clocked ...

Re: Finding old cartridge owners

Did you lend games much as a kid? It's not always easy sorting it out and getting them back! Kids are very unreliable. I only had a few NES games as a kid, so I was usually the lendee :P But I tried to take as good care of the games I loaned as I did of my own, and I certainly made sure to return t...

Re: Finding old cartridge owners

Of course it was perfectly in their right to do whatever they wanted with the games they or their parents had bought. I just don't see the point in ruining the appearance of something you've bought just because you can.
