OK, but the Genesis version was still released (it's caled "Revenge of the Joker") and it looks pretty bad. Actually, I'm not sure if the 16-bit versions look bad or if they just seem mediocre compared to how well the resources were used in the NES version. Fact is that the NES version ha...

I have tested Battletoads's 1st level (the ground and the boss's red display) and I after playing with the brightness on both the LCD computer monitor (using an accurate palette with a PC emulator) and my CRT TV (running a real NES), I can confirm that the LCD monitor's gamma is off from the CRT's g...

I'm surprised that (AFAIK) very few people, if any, had noticed this gamma problem with NES games on LCDs, since I'd imagine it could really interfere in creating "accurate" palettes...one test pic to see if your monitor (or NES palette) needs to be gamma corrected would be Celius's avatar...

Most likely your LCD's NTSC composite video decoder is causing the differences, since the NES composite signal is somewhat non-standard. I get the idea that all digital TVs suck when fed analog video signals. Actually, I meant computer monitors NES emulators for PC (with relatively accurate palette...

Gamma weirdness with the NES palette

Since NES games were developed for CRTs, they were developed with a gamma around 2.2-2.5, correct? On my LCD monitor, hues of the same luminance are much more closer to each other in value than on my CRT monitor. This makes most games (such as Bionic Commando, Vice: Project Doom, and Trojan) that us...

How close to (or far from) Japanese TV yellow boost is Nestopia's yellow boost? Is the yellow boost in Nestopia generally typical or atypical to most of these TVs? Why does Nestopia's yellow boost differentiate colors 20h and 30h in red, green, and yellow emphasis? Could this be a bug, or does this...

Anyone knows the correct values? R-Y: 90°, 0.570 G-Y: 236°, 0.351 B-Y: 0°, 1.016 Actually, the gains should be twice as high, but for some reason Nestopia requires them at half value. When I tried to enter in the doubled gain values into Nestopia's settings, B-Y's doubled gain of 2.032 was clipped ...

But what peppers described before seems to match screen tearing: Regular monitors do not have this issue, its a HDTV or maybe LCD thing it is paticularly apperint with games such as RPG's, this happens with emulators for SNES and below. it appear normal when holing still but when moveing around you ...

Why peppers originally considered LCDs as the problem may be because page tearing may be more noticeable on LCD monitors than on CRT monitors. Because of the different ways these monitors light up pixels, pixel changes are sharper on LCD monitors than on CRT monitors. Light intensity of a steady pix...

Setting your monitor to a refresh rate of 60 Hz (or a multiple of 60), turning on "Synchronize to refresh rate", and enabling VSync (Options -> Timing) should help provide the smoothest experience possible. On my monitor (with a 60 Hz refresh rate), disabling VSync causes those page tearin...

The ONLY way you could possibly modify VRAM (through registers $2006, and $2007) mid-screen is if 1. The VRAM had dual ports and one of them was hooked up to the CPU bus, which is not the case, or 2. If the PPU is not rendering at time of modify. And I'm not sure what's going on in those other game...

RC Pro-Am (PRG0) DMAs from PRG $F800, which contains all $F8, then updates specific entry with manual OAM writes. I checked Wizards and Warriors III (and Ironsword as well), neither of them touch the sprite registers mid-frame, but they appear to reserve Kuros' (the player) CHR updates mid-frame. Af...

Mid-frame VRAM writes (not palette)

Which games write to CHR-RAM and/or nametable VRAM mid-frame, if any? I don't think mid-frame VRAM writes (i.e. writes to CHR-RAM or nametable data) have ever been mentioned in stuff about hard-to-emulate games; and I'm not talking about mid-frame palette writes. I think they could be useful for wri...

Questions about color encoders in Nestopia and Sega Li

How uncommon is Nestopia's "15° Canonical" encoder in consumer TVs? Is it uncommon enough to be generally less accurate to the TV experience than "Consumer" encoders? Nestopia's "Alternative" encoder boosts yellow, which I have read to be an effect from NTSC-J, so is i...
