I tend to call it a metasprite, alongside the idea of a metatile - one object made up of many.

I thought it was interesting how he brought up the way screen design leads players toward certain areas and might make you attempt to find secrets. I always forget where the meat is in level 1 because I try a few walls near the start and give up, having been taught that experimentation really isn't ...

An interesting game design review of Castlevania 3

I found this today and thought it was an interesting deconstruction of the way Castlevania 3 is set up. It's not a positive look but it gives some nice ideas on ways you might improve gameplay and encourage exploration. http://www.gamecareerguide.com/features/869/good_games_bad_design__episode_.php?...

So in this other thread someone linked Thaddeus's CV2 hack, and I figured out how he was doing the forest graphics - using blackness as the trunks of trees and starting/ending the forest graphic at different times and heights. A while ago I added to what I had done with it and made some leafy canopy...

Yeah, I heard about this and thought of you right away. I don't even know how this can happen in the modern world, it's not like Brazil is an underdeveloped country.

Open source graphics

There are a number of places online that offer free graphics for games. Many are not necessarily appropriate for NES games, but they can always be adapted to be smaller, use less colors or even just for inspiration. http://opengameart.org/ Featuring cool stuff like this. http://www.molotov.nu/?page=...

The best "firewall" is a program called DeepFreeze that logs all changes made to the hard drive and discards them on reboot. That's basically the same thing I do with virtual machines, but a little more extreme. I'd actually like to try DeepFreeze, but The problem is that it appears to be...

The best "firewall" is a program called DeepFreeze that logs all changes made to the hard drive and discards them on reboot. Every day my computer is exactly the way it was a year ago when I set it up. I have a folder with program installers if I need to put something on temporarily. If I ...

Even Namco has done some copying: Katamari series is just Bubbles (1982) by Williams, redone as a 3D platformer. But again, original characters and original art style keep it from being a violation. I don't think this is a fair comparison at all. There is far more that separates the two games than ...

This thread isn't exclusively for NES art but I think it would fit well in the new forum too:

Yeah, I think this is a good idea. You don't necessarily want to bloat up the forums when there aren't that many users anyway, but it is a logical addition given the other special forums like music. EDIT: The first topic I'll move into the new section is probably the one that dissected CV3 and Faxan...

That's really awesome.

So, theoretically, someone could convert a video or gif to 10x8 pixels and color reduce it to the full NES palette?

...At which point it would look pretty bad, but hey, full palette, right?

Ah ha, you never played it. It's clear you never heard of the Road to Rhome atleast(or you quit shortly after reaching the cave)? Why did you call it Rhome? It's Rhone. Maybe it's you who's never played it? I've beaten it at least 3 times without cheating. It's incredibly easy and I don't know why ...

Dragon Warrior 2 is incredibly random to be on your list. No RPG is hard, only time consuming at worst, as you can just level up more. At the max levels with the best equipment (that is easily found), the last boss isn't too much trouble. It might take a few tries. Yes, you have to search a few grou...

My antivirus blocked a malicious URL when I want to the board linked at the Youtube video. It may have just been someone's avatar or something, but I wanted to let people know just in case.

EDIT: Yeah, it's someone's avatar hosted at a bad site. Don't think it's anything to worry about.
