DMC will play any digitized sound you throw at it. Give it a recording of a drum and it will play it. It's how those baseball games on the NES yell out "Strike!" and "Ball!". Of course, first the sound gets converted to 1-bit, and gets sampled at a much lower rate. Thanks. Did y...

Thanks for the 50,000 foot view, guys. :) One question: Tokumaru and Blargg both mentioned using DMC to play "drums". Do you guys literally mean the sound of the percussion instrument, or is "drums" an entire category of sounds? In either case, why is DMC required? Is it that the...

Strategies for sound management.

How do games like Zelda, Metroid, Final Fantasy and Crystalis play "background" music while your character wanders around? Do they do so with the square, triangle and noise channels or with DMC? Is DMC typically used for one-off sounds, like getting hit by an enemy, or discharging an energ...

Ok. I really have no idea what it takes to make reasonable sounds efficiently (in terms on cpu, ram and rom usage) on the NES. How do games like Zelda, Metroid, Final Fantasy and Crystalis play "background" music while your character wanders around? I guess I have not paid attention, but w...

SecretServiceDude, Interesting idea about keeping ROM segments separate to make them easier to "explore" using a hex-editor. You inspired me to hack my build scripts. :) I now have two linker files and two build targets: The full NES game and just the tiles as if it were a CHRROM game with...

(going off topic) :) Linkers are indeed a dark art. Second only to the dreaded "scsi chain". http://74.125.45.104/search?q=cache:plYiNfv4MCwJ:https://0x55517066.adsl.cybercity.dk/quotes/+quote+goat+scsi+chain&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=2&gl=us&client=firefox-a Search for "Jo...

It is great that you've got it to work. Please don't take the following as any sort of detraction of your skill. You don't have to use a batch file. The ld65 linker is fully capable of creating a properly laid out .nes file in iNes format. At the moment my project uses MMC1 (16K banks) with 4 banks....

I was more interested in if anyone has ever had problems keeping the DMC channel saturated with samples copied from banks ROM into RAM. For example... every frame I'd copy the next XXX samples from whichever ROM bank into the ram cache. DMC always reads samples from $Cxxx, so copying those to RAM i...

:) I've been writing and optimizing 6502 code for nearly 20 years (unprofessionally, Apple IIe hobby stuff). One of my favorite computer books is the "Machine Language for Beginners, by Richard Mansfield, 1983" [1] I think I got my copy back in 1986, at the tender age of 10. I don't intend...

In my game (MMC1 cart), I plan on making heavy use of bank-switching to store lots of game map data, battle algorithms, etc... in various banks. I was hoping to copy music into $7800-$7fff and play it from there as a mechanism to deal with switching banks and DMC. I have not experimented with this y...

What mapper does your game use? How much PROG and CHR rom? Would this game ever be a candidate for a future "garage games" cart? UNROM, 128KB (may go to 256 if need be. It'd be an easy upgrade) I don't know about any "garage cart", but there would certainly be a regular cart for...

What does the "RR" column mean in the "board table"? Side note: It would be nice to have a list of games using a particular board, as part of the wiki pages that detail the specifics of each board type. ie, http://nesdevwiki.org/wiki/TKROM could list "Crystalis". Is the...
