Hm, point taken. I guess you could consider this a review of the "enhanced" version of Gradius rather than the regular release. The best console port is actually the PC Engine release and is still one of my favorite games for the system.

I played both versions back to back and the differences are rather minor so I can't agree with that. Yes, there are some additional bosses as well as four options and a button config added, but the game still is Gradius. I own the Famicom cart and would happily recommend it.

thanks guys for participating. The review is now up! I asked many communities about Gradius and some of what you guys had to say had me rolling on the floor. Good times.

Describe Gradius 1 in a word

I'm working on a review for Gradius, and would like to get some community involvement for a few odd opening paragraphs..don't worry, it'll be easy! All you have to do is describe the first Gradius game in one word. You can make as many one word statements as you'd like, but keep it down to one word ...

Ah. So a way to think of it might be that the VRC4 has three banks of storage wherein to store the game's many one-time only boss sprites, boss patterns, stage layouts, etc? Gradius II does seem to avoid reusing sprites as most other shooters on the NES do. That mixed with the cheaper costs of Konam...

thank you for the info, but I must confess that much of that is lost on me. my working knowledge of mappers is rather superficial - I know of them, but exact bank switching duties and such is confusing and I don't really understand much of it. Could you recommend a good source of info on the subject...

Gradius 2 VRC4 questoins

Hey all, I'm writing a review of one of the Famicom's best shooters, Gradius 2 and would like to put in the details of how the game was achieved. I know the game uses mapper 25, the Konami VRC4 but I don't really know much about it except that like the MMC2 mapper 9 was used only for Punch-Out, VRC4...

How to get expansion audio from NES adapter?

I got a copy of Lagrange Point for x-mas and would like to play it on my NES. My NES has the 47k resistor mod but I'll need to add something to my Famicom-to-NES adapter to get it working. I have a Gyromite adapter. Can I mod it to get expansion audio to pass through it and if so, which pins and wha...

Of course, but I don't want to actively promote that to all the kiddies who view my blog.
