Just thought I'd weigh in here, since it's been a while. The first round of hardware will likely ship to its owners soon, after which I am happy to release instructions and code for building these. They are quite cheap parts-wise, and pretty simple to build. Given the cost (less than $30 in parts to...

I'm in MN and I have been to the event before, and I have been considering coming again this year. I don't know my finances or job schedule will support that, but if I can come I can bring a small NTSC monitor or two. (commodore screens) If someone else is coming from MN and I can't come and they wa...

@blargg: That would be hilarious. It really would. As far as copy-protecting NES games, it's really a lost cause in some respects. I know alot of people will disagree with me, but personally I think that the modern age just makes copy protection a waste of time. The internet make distribution of inf...

It would need to plug into the 15-pin expansion connector, that should work fine (with minor software changes, at worst). I've been curious about writing to FlashROM through the PPU address/data (for CHR-ROM). I don't think I'll use CHR-ROM, but someone should try that out. I'm also thinking one co...

IMO, having the programming hardware is a real nice thing if you're into DIY hardware stuff. I know alot of people here are all about the code and don't care so much about doing hardware for the sheer fun of it. Also useful if you do more stuff than NES, IE, Neo Geo development, or tinkering with ar...

I would say it doesn't really matter that much. For NES development you'll probably be using mostly older DIP parts anyway, and any programmer that's worth any money at all will support them. 27C and 29F series chips come to mind as possibly the most commonly needed, and nearly any programmer except...

Well, it seems my programmer does fully support 29F040 chips (AMD) but not 29F040B chips. (also AMD) Something must have changed between the regular and 'B' revisions of the chips to make them not 100% compatible. So I guess I've diagnosed the problem. I can write to a 29F040B, which is the importan...

Is this normal behavior for a flash chip?
I got some flash chips today. They are 29F040B chips. They were sent to me advertised as blank and verified, and I trust the friend who shipped them to me. I popped them into my Xeltek Superpro II programmer and did a blank check, which came out OK. I tried to issue an "unprotect all sectors&qu...

That EPROM programmer looks like it could work, but I'd really suggest you ask the seller for a few things, to make sure it's not a scam and it's what you want. Ask for a full-resolution picture of the device to be emailed to you, and ask for a list of the devices the programmer supports. Also, reme...

Thanks for pointing that out Memblers. As it turns out, we haven't used Ultima Exodus, it was just the first that came to mind. Bards Tale and NES Open Tournament Golf have been ones that I have actually used, and they have the MMC1B2 and MMC1B3 inside. That should save us some trouble. EDIT: I just...
