Well, you could just go find a copy of Ultima Exodus (which nobody really wants to put themselves through the torture of playing these days) and it has everything you'd need. 8k battery ram, 8k CHR RAM, PRG ROM. Dirt cheap game if you look on evilBay.

As far as I'm concerned, the board is interesting, but not right away. I want these so that they can be provided to people at cost, but people can also still build them for themselves. A design which uses existing carts can do that more easily, I think, than a custom PCB. But if you can build it, I'...

Well, I'm kinda clueless about how best to handle serial communications. The best I can do with serial is vintage computer stuff, and most of my gear actually tops out at 19200 baud.

The life time on the flash chips is variable based on what manufacturer they come from. I'll have to check on exactly how many cycles it is.

Of course, a DIY-er who makes his own can just socket the Flash and when it dies you can drop a new one in.

Well, not necessarily Tepples. Once swopped, presumably a loader program will still be in the 2k WRAM of the NES, and then one can draw more data off the serial cable for playback and use it immediately, discarding it. One would not have to store everything. EDIT: correct me if I'm wrong Blargg, but...

I think for my serial cable I'll be using the MAX232 because I want to use it with some hardware that is certainly outside the correct voltage range and has a tendency to get a bit finicky if it doesn't get the expected voltages returned either. The schematic Blargg posted will probably work fine wi...

Expansion chips? Heh, not really. Surprisingly enough, alot of them don't deal with them because it's "too hard" to use the real hardware. Actually, with a stop-n-swop it'd be possible to do more with expansion hardware too, probably. Hmm, an interesting possibility...

Part of the reason is that it's fun to do! One thing to note is that the bootstrap is intended to be able to load code into flash or ram, or both. In some ways this then becomes the poor-man's CopyNES. With the lockout chip disabled Blargg seems to think that it would even be possible to do a stop-n...

Well, if you already have a drawer of chopped up NES carts (I do) then it doesn't matter too much if you are using an original cartridge. And yes, Winter Games deserves to die!

My first guess on those computers in the lower picture is that they're HP 64000 series computers (technically mainframes). They were widely used for processor emulation and logic analysis, and are still popular with people who develop embedded systems today. I happen to have the "portable"...

I'll just add that while I will be making a few batches of these, my target audience is the folks at the various chipmusic sites and such. If people here want to buy ready-made hardware from me when the time comes I'll be happy to do that. However, something Bargg forgot to mention is that there wil...

This is super cool! Any chance of updates? By the way, very nice documentation with the game.

This actually sounds like an incredibly fun party game idea, but perhaps a less gruesome overtone would be more fitting with the spirit of classic NES games.

I tried your demo game, and it was a blast!

That's what I thought... But interestingly enough, the SKROM doesn't ship with a 32 pin chip in the PRG spot like you'd expect, but a 28 pin one. Though it has holes for a 32 pin chip. Does the fact that they used a different chip in there make a difference at all? http://www.thenesdump.com/board%20...
