Re: 8bit Music Power Cart (internals)
The good news is, if you wanted to fix the issue, the Micron M29F160F is a fully compatible, drop-in replacement and is 5V tolerant (and it's still in production, so you don't have to resort to "new-used" stock).

Re: Adding LED Lights to cartridge?
Diodes are fixed voltage, you'll burn it up (sometimes instantly) if you hook it up directly to 5V. You need a resistor in series. Usually 330ohm is a good value. So 5V-resistor-LED-Gnd or 5V-LED-resistor-Gnd. Like I said, it's possible to blow them almost instantly, so it might already be dead.

Re: Chrono trigger conversion
Pick a different EEPROM, using a 16-bit ROM for an 8-bit cart is going to be an unnecessary pain in the butt.

Weird, I would have expected a switching mode regulator to be worse that a linear one when it comes to this sort of thing.mikejmoffitt wrote:My first-generation motherboard Super Famicom doesn't have it after I've replaced the 7805 with an efficient switching mode drop-in replacement.

Re: Super FX chip recreation
Interesting note, there are current-gen processors that are supposedly derived from the original SuperFX. Not sure if they are compatible in any practical sense, but it might be worth a look.

Re: Super FX chip recreation
The reason the SD2SNES is so expensive is because it's a flash cart, which requires a lot of things you wouldn't need if you were still talking about the initial idea of essentially a repro cart with an SFX clone. You'd have a standard ROM, instead of the PSRAM, you wouldn't need the SD card or the ...

Re: Super FX chip recreation
The programming files for the sd2snes FPGA are stored on the SD card, so you absolutely could develop your own custom coprocessor core, I just don't know how the loading is done (I'm guessing it's handled by the menu, which is an SNES application, so you might have to add support for your new core i...

Re: Super FX chip recreation
A microcontroller is not the right tool for the job. The SuperFX is a processor with its own ISA, with very particular timings for its instructions, etc. Trying to implement this on a microcontroller, which is a processor with an existing (and in the case of MIPS, completely incompatible) ISA, is li...

Re: SNES controller ports: maximum current draw?
The voltage pin on the controller port is just connected directly to the main 5V rail, so the available current is only limited by the power supply/voltage regulator (minus the power draw of the rest of the system).

Re: Super FX chip recreation
An FPGA is what you want for this, not a DSP/uC. An FPGA is 100% capable of this, the problem is that the chip hasn't been reverse engineered fully enough at a low enough level to implement the necessary HDL (ikari_01 has been working on it for the SD2SNES, but so far it's not working yet). So is it...

Re: Hi-Def NES HDMI Adapter for the NES
To fully test every game manually would take longer than it did to develop the thing in the first place. Yet we can probably safely assume Nintendo ran the 713 licensed games through lot check on the toploader (model NES-101). It's less of an issue there because the toploader used the exact same CP...

Re: Hi-Def NES HDMI Adapter for the NES
There are 713 licensed games and 114 unlicensed games, and that's just US releases. Not to mention homebrew. To fully test every game manually would take longer than it did to develop the thing in the first place. Software development is an iterative process, and with reconfigurable hardware, the sa...

Re: Ethical dillema on repros rom hacks and homebrews
While some older games might fall under the umbrella of abandonware, Nintendo games most certainly do not. First of all, the original copyrights have not expired, and second, they have the Wii(U)/3DS Virtual Console, which shows very clearly that they have not abandoned those libraries (even if a sp...
