Re: Controller port to serial cable

Well, for your purposes, it sounds like a low-cost USB microcontroller is the way to go. Then you can easily reconfigure it if you decide to go with the expansion port device. From your speed requirements, I would guess that 16MHz would be sufficient (I think?). If you're using a microcontroller tha...

Re: Controller port to serial cable

On top of that, since all you're using it for is the USART, I'm pretty sure you could do the same with the Atmega16U2, which is $3-4. Or microchip sells the SPI+USB PIC16F1455 for $1.50. Most of the $80 seem to be due to wanting someone else to do all the soldering and using off-the-shelf modules. ...

Re: Controller port to serial cable

Ok, forget the FTDI chip. Even still, a Teensy++2.0 is basically just a breakout for an Atmega32U4 microcontroller, which is a $6 chip. On top of that, since all you're using it for is the USART, I'm pretty sure you could do the same with the Atmega16U2, which is $3-4. And yes, you're right about th...

SNES Hyper Beam

Has anybody pulled apart an SNES Hyper Beam receiver? I recently purchased one of the controllers, but it came without a receiver and I'm interested in trying to build one. Looks like your basic I/R remote transceiver setup, but I'd be interested in seeing some pics of the innards of an official rec...

Re: no$sns - new SNES emulator

Yeah, sorry about derailing the thread. Splitting this off to a separate topic would probably be good... Anyway, I've started getting into PCB assembly, and it really does result in a much better end product than breadboarding. It also tends to be cheaper on parts. Ideally, what you'd need is: FT232...

Re: no$sns - new SNES emulator

I was talking more along the lines of https://www.sparkfun.com/products/9716? rather than the cable. Supposedly, the FT232R chip is capable of synchronous bit-bang transfer, though you might have to hack that board to access pins not broken out on it in order to change that configuration (or just mo...

Re: no$sns - new SNES emulator

> It definitely works with two controllers. It was designed so that IObit toggles the USART vs the controller. Oh, didn't knew that. I had a short look at http://byuu.org/snes/usart/design but without schematic it wasn't too obvious how it would work. The $27 teensy++ was also keeping me away there...

Re: Road Blaster, now also on SNES

> What changed with MSU-1 from 21FX that made it no longer an expansion port device? It's not hard to do, it's just that there's nobody with both the time and interest to do it. Well, time, interest, and knowledge. I have the first two, but lack the third. I've got a pretty strong software backgrou...

Re: Road Blaster, now also on SNES

Could it be modified to work with the finalized design? From my understanding of the hack, all it does is jump to a cutscene at a specified point, then returns at the end of playback. The movie playback aspect is still viable, so is the finalized MSU-1 really not capable of achieving the hack, or is...

Re: Road Blaster, now also on SNES

Why doesn't the CT hack work with MSU-1 anymore? I thought it worked in BSNES... or was that only in an old version? Could the hack be altered to work with the finalized MSU-1?

Re:

If only MSU-1 was more accessible. It's a shame that only SD2SNES supports it right now. =( That and I can't buy an SD2SNES right now even if I wanted it. Yes, if only it were emulated or something ... :P But yeah, I've brought it up with the Snes9X devs. Although MSU1 is only ~4KB of code, the pro...

Re: SNES cartridge PCB thickness

I have a board outline for the carts with expansion wings as well, trimmed a bit to fit within the 10cm width (the original carts are 102mm, not a huge deal, the fitting slots are still there). I have outlines for the No-RAM boards, the normal-sized boards without wings, and the full-sized boards wi...

Re: MIDI player for the SPC, any interest ?

An engine supporting real-time note input would be really neat with a project I've had on the shelf for awhile. I found the official schematics for the Super Multi-Tap, and just for kicks I threw together a schematic for 2 Multi-Taps and 8 controllers all built onto a single board. Which is basicall...

Re: Broken "Illusion of Time" cartridge fixable?

However you choose to repair it, be sure to sand down the part of the shell that rubbed on the PCB so it doesn't happen again.
