ah, thanks a lot! I tied pin 1 to hole 27 and pin 27 to pin 28 - at both prg and chr, just to be sure. Works fine now!

You need a 27C020 for both sides. You can't put both PRG and CHR in the same chip though, it has to be 2 chips. Yep, I know :) You can use FLASH (29F) instead of EPROM (27C). It is cheaper.
