Re: Difficulty of porting a gameboy game to the nes.
Maybe shove the gameplay to one side of the screen and use the blank area as the menu bar, ala Truxton or Galaga. I'm not sure if the NES could do such a thing and scroll vertically, though, I haven't seen a game that does. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBwljUWnXKY Although it does so at the expe...

Re: Difficulty of porting a gameboy game to the nes.
What will you do with the remaining space on the NES? Keep it blank? Invent more level data and imposing big changes on how the game is played? Maybe shove the gameplay to one side of the screen and use the blank area as the menu bar, ala Truxton or Galaga. I'm not sure if the NES could do such a t...

Re: Misc. NES-like graphics
The idea is that you develop the game with the NES' graphical and sound limitations in mind, and treating them as a guideline. The game would have to look a certain way since you can only show 8 sprites on a line without them flickering, and your stages might resemble a Hanna-Barbera backdrop since ...

Re: Misc. NES-like graphics
Someone needs to immortalize your work in a homebrew. Most people would rather opt for a faux-retro game with none of the limitations, much faster development, and a much easier language. That said, something this nice and detailed would be amazing to see in an NES game, since as Tepples discovered...

Re: Diggin' in the carts - video game music documentary
@Sik: There shouldn't be any difference between the two, maybe they added/omitted some songs in the Japanese version? Some games that I do know have different soundtracks for the US and Japan are Casino Kid and Wall Street Kid, the former has the music played with different pitches, not sure about t...

Re: Diggin' in the carts - video game music documentary
Alter Ego is a recent(ish) homebrew I can think of that had a nice soundtrack. Maybe we're just sick of everyone and their grandmother trying to sound like Mega Man 3-6? :P I think it's partly that, and partly how a lot of NES music is not actually made to be used in an NES game. It might depend on...

Re: The NES vs. its contemporary competition
At that first video you posted, I see the game doing some screen warbling effect. Could the NES do something similar? I know Kickle Cublicle does something similar. What part of Kickle Cubicle? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIOo3DZRPWk at 14:23 According to the same game, there's also a scene whe...

Re: The NES vs. its contemporary competition
Huh, I could've sworn that a thread here mentioned that, no matter how hard they tried, they couldn't find a pattern, and by extension they couldn't replicate it. Did other consoles of the time use lockout? I believe the SMS and 7800 had software based lockout, where they had to look for a string in...

Re: The NES vs. its contemporary competition
I was just gonna mention the NES' 10NES chip. That was a very effective method of anti-piracy that was difficult for pirates to circumvent. To this day, no one has deciphered how the chip actually works, and the CIC chip used in repros is allegedly a clone of Atari's Rabbit chip, itself a clone of t...

Re: The NES vs. its contemporary competition
While it's much more likely for piracy to happen on PC than on consoles, isn't it still rather uncommon? Then again, I don't expect PC game sales to be particularly high, if anything, most non-Valve game sales seem to be rather balanced across the board. So the piracy ratio would be rather high give...

Re: The NES vs. its contemporary competition
I've never heard of the CreatiVision, but research says it uses a 2MHz 6502. So how did that machine compare to the others, and the NES by extension? As for consoles over PCs, your essay nails most of the points, but misses a critical one. Game availability. PC might have dozens of tower defense gam...

Re: The NES vs. its contemporary competition
Because I want to play Metal Gear Solid 5™ and Grand Theft Auto 5™ as soon as they come out, without being spoiled of their story or gameplay until the PC version is made. There are also some games that are console exclusive such as Red Dead Redemption, and other miscellaneous games that are locked ...

Re: The NES vs. its contemporary competition
If what I read is correct, the Genesis was only successful because it allowed Sega to challenge Nintendo's status in the market. If Nintendo didn't have those scary spooky policies, chances are the Genesis wouldn't have done so well; they wouldn't be able to prop themselves up by attacking Nintendo....

Re: The NES vs. its contemporary competition
Release dates are beside the point I was trying to make that practical level design on one platform turns into leaps of faith on another. Or are you trying to claim that this particular leap of faith was intentional? Actually, I was bringing up something entirely differently. Who's to say the NES g...
