Is a NES game able to detect if it is being emulated?
Is a NES game able to detect if it is being emulated or not? If so, could it be possible to detect if a save state has been made and loaded? It'd be neat to screw with the player for CHEATING.

Re: Long-term goal: a Metal Gear-like game for NES
What I meant to say is that I can tell the difference between a 128 kbps file and a 320 kbps, not the sample rate. With what format and encoder? There's a lot more to audio quality than just bit rate. (...But this probably isn't relevant to making a NES game, so if you feel like replying, yo...

Re: Long-term goal: a Metal Gear-like game for NES
I really like NES Metal Gear. I grew up playing that game, and it was a lot of fun. Anyway, good luck with the game. It'd be cool to see something like this on the NES! I enjoyed it, too, but it is certainly not without its flaws. If you liked the first NES Metal Gear , you'd likely love Snake's Re...

Re: Long-term goal: a Metal Gear-like game for NES
I just realized. For some reason, I was confusing sample rate with bit rate. What I meant to say is that I can tell the difference between a 128 kbps file and a 320 kbps, not the sample rate. You're both correct. There's a really good video here explaining details of digital audio like this: ...

Re: Long-term goal: a Metal Gear-like game for NES
I think you've got that backwards. There's no difference between 44.1kHz and 48kHz, but the difference in resolution between 8-bit and 16-bit is usually very noticeable. Are you sure? The sample rate of an audio file determines the highest frequency available and I can easily tell the difference be...

Re: Long-term goal: a Metal Gear-like game for NES
I have some goals for the number of channels, ultimately it depends on type of synthesis that is used. They can all be used at the same time, and instruments can use multiple channel/types (several instruments can be chained together and transposed). I haven't done phase modulation yet, but I've be...

Re: How much to pay a programmer?
Programming is skilled work, so expect to pay more than minimum wage per hour. Even 12 to 15 USD per hour is on the low end. Rainwarrior's covered this. The scope of the game only factors in in that it'd take longer. A lot of us here could do most of what you see in commercial games. If you're will...

Re: How much to pay a programmer?
As a ballpark: I think entry level programming jobs in the US would pay at least $1000 a week as a salaried employee. An experienced programmer might earn well over $2000. If you're hiring them as an independent contractor and not an employee (with benefits, an office, support, paying for their equ...

How much to pay a programmer?
For such a niche activity as NES game development, I understand that there may not be a standard for how much a programmer(s) should be paid or what method they are to be paid in ($XX per hour, per week, per product, etc.). So, I would ask if someone were to come up to you and present a job opportun...

Re: Hello Fellow Devs and Announcing Meteor Swarm NES - Beta
Meteor Swarm for the NES has had quite a few changes, including updated graphics to make it look more NES like and various tweaks and changes based on feedback from the Beta testers. Couple more minor issues to sort out and we should be ready for the next round of Beta testing. Here is a short vide...

Re: Long-term goal: a Metal Gear-like game for NES
I'd love more to see a Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake from MSX coming to NES on VRC6 with it's original music. That's practically what the goal is without the Metal Gear characters since Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake really improved in a lot of areas the original was lacking in (like being able to punch wal...

Re: Hello Fellow Devs and Announcing Meteor Swarm NES - Beta
Meteor Swarm is lookin' SLICK, man! I can't say much in terms of how it plays (since I haven't played it), but I like the way the font looks. The sprites look like they're neon in a way.

Re: Is it possible to add new colors to the palette?
Or, devices like the Hi-Def NES could be modified/designed to allow for software to detect that they are installed and ask to modify the palette. But this would be a pretty specific target market ... That reminds me of how Shantae for the Game Boy Color had special features when used on a Game Boy ...

6502 Philanthropy actually has a nice ring to it, don't 'cha think? Like a name of an indie game studio.
