Brony Blaster (New ROM as of 23/11)

Post by Vectrex2809 »

EDIT 23/11:

If you haven't been on NintendoAge recently, here's the newest ROM for Brony Blaster. The platforming engine is complete, even though I might add a few things to the finished game. Here's a DL link for the latest ROM: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/533 ... -22-15.nes

EDIT 24/10:

If you have been following my thread on NA, you might already know that the original ROM was scrapped and I started recoding the game in a new MMC3 ROM. For those that don't know yet, here's a little video to watch. I will upload a new ROM one of these days so you can experience the game first hand :). A new ROM is available below :)

;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;OLD STUFF;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

If you haven't seen it already on Nintendoage, Twitter, The FCEUX glitch thread or Youtube, here is a little game I'm programming on the NES.
Story: Bronies all over the world went mad because of the cancellation of "My Little Pony - Friendship is Magic", and it's up to you to brutally murder them stop them.
A download link is available below :) (Now fixed for real hardware - I hope)

Here's a YT video of the game (Earlier version) in action) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D81Gnpg6QNY
Most of my updates are going to be here - http://www.nintendoage.com/forum/messag ... did=142081
And here's my Twitter, where I'll be doing a few updates too. - https://twitter.com/FG_Software

Thanks for looking at my game :)

The text below "1UP" and "TOP" on the title screen is scrambled on my PowerPak. So is "HISCORE" during gameplay.

And the Lode Runner-style scrolling, which doesn't start revealing the area to the side until you get dangerously close, doesn't help either.

Have any pics?

EDIT: I think I know what the problem is. I'm going to try to fix it soon.
EDIT #2: Now (hopefully) fixed.

Nope, she is supposed to have 48 HP... Are you playing on real hardware?
EDIT:She dies on my emulator. I don't know why she wouldn't die on real hardware...

Yeah, I played the game on FCEUX and the game worked fine for me. I even got to the end and what the heck is the thing you are fighting? For what it is, the game is pretty enjoyable, but I agree with tepples when he said that the scrolling should be fixed. I found myself getting hit because I didn't know what was to the right or left of me. I would consider moving the boundaries that stop the character from moving and start to scroll everything else closer to the center of the screen. I really like the parallax scrolling effects, like the Mega Man 2 style building and the part with the scrolling city with the raster effects and the sprites.

I wasn't expecting to be able to jump over the edge but it's those small details that make me like a game. I did get stuck at the menu for a minute, I didn't realise I had to keep pressing the A button to progress through the menu. Regardless it was fun once I got into the game.

That was fun (family members here were freaking out over the poor ponies) but too easy. I beat the game my first try.

You know, I was bored and I don't think you are using all 4 sprite palettes, so I decided to redesign your missile if you want to use it. You could horizontally flip the fire to make it look like it's moving, but move it over every pixel when you do so.

Edit: I played your game a little more and I encountered a glitch where one of the shots from the flying ponies wrapped around the screen when it was at the edge. It didn't hit me, so I don't know if this is only a graphical error.

Sure, I can fix the scrolling :) And I had a lot of fun programming the parallax scrolling too. As for the last boss, it is supposed to be Lauren Faust, the creator of the My Little Pony show. I'm planning to have a second form for her (hence the relative ease of defeating her first form)

This is a known glitch that's going to be fixed in the final version. I'm going to give the missile a try, it seems like it could work with the sprite palettes :)

Hahahaha, thanks :P These are just the bosses, I'm currently programming the main game, which is going to be a platformer.

I love the parallax effect you used for the Game Over screen! However, firmly believe your game is in need of much better graphics, which I cannot provide. Maybe you could go to 4chan's /mlp/ board and ask if there are any sprite artists there, and tell them what kind of sprites you want. I'd advise you to not tell them what the project would be like until you show them what the graphics were used for. I mean, are you going to let generic flash games that look like NES games get the hand on you? They will gladly do it for free if you can find a good artist.

Do you plan on bringing other Hasbro toy lines into this, or just My Little Pony?

Considering how MLP used to be stupidly huge thing in the past few years (allegedly, a person made around $7000 per month just by commissioning...certain kinds of artwork and animations), I'm guessing it will be a safe bet that it will mostly focus on MLP. Until He-Man, Transformers, and G.I. Joe have stupidly large and vocal fanbases, that is.

The game is super easy if you hold down auto A and auto B, and stupidly hard otherwise.
