Ideas for my future NES projects
I'm trying to gauge interest in what my next NES-related new project could be. This is a straw (non-binding) poll about what you would like to see, configured for approval voting (pick as many as you want).
World 1-1
This is a proof of concept of a traditional NES style platformer engine, reproducing an iconic level of an iconic game. The idea is that ROM hackers will be able to use this as a base for mods rather than proprietary games.
FizzBuzz
A 2-player educational game whose development was interrupted by my acceptance of the Haunted: Halloween '85 contract. It challenges players to juggle multiples, factors, and prime or square numbers.
Music editor
Make a tracker for my NES music engine that I keep talking about. The current method of entering a sequence is not really any harder than MML, but I imagine a lot of people prefer a GUI.
FHBG remake
A few years ago, I remade NovaSquirrel's Forehead Block Guy in Pygame, aiming to polish its gameplay for the future Action 53 remix compo. I'd like to finish this game and port it back to NES.
Cut scene engine and autism short film
Create a sprite animation engine, and demonstrate it with a short film about two girls playing soccer in the back yard, with undertones related to autism.
Something else
If you want to buy my services for a paid project, or even if you just have an idea for a free project for which I could be a good fit, I want to hear it.

Hmm. I voted for something else. So, how about this: A game about vampires and other demons, but, unlike in the "Castlevania" games, the typical attributes of vampires are actually featured in the game: Staking them through the heart means instant death, sunlight burns them etc.
My game "City Trouble":

Re: Ideas for my future NES projects
World 1-1, an open platform engine would be cool.

Music editor. It would be cool to have a tracker like editor, or a simple step sequencer.

Re: Ideas for my future NES projects
A music editor specific to the engine means not having to try and explain the engine's features and limitations compared to Famitracker when finding chiptune musicians to work on projects, and not having to transcribe the end result when it's done.
Since FHBG pretty much already had an enhanced NES remake as its spiritual successor, DABG, I think another remake would benefit a lot from new ideas to set it apart, but we would have to figure them out. The SDL remake seemed like it was starting to become quite a different game from what DABG turned out to be and that just needs more developing.

In the lead by a large margin are World 1-1 and the music editor.
NovaSquirrel: From what I remember, the Python version was shaping up fairly close to what you had in mind for the SDL version.
mikaelmoizt: What's a "step sequencer"?

In the world of computers, this is a step sequencer. (this example taken from FL studio)tepples wrote: What's a "step sequencer"?

You mean Fruity LoopsFL studio
Re:Step Sequencer
Maybe a module for DMC samples. I'd prefer a music studio to look like a MIDI piano roll.

Step sequencer and piano roll (in that sense) are essentially the same thing. I get the idea.
Somehow in the NES context, "Ode to Joy" makes me think of Dian Shi Mali, the "Push Start to rich" game.

The SDL version was far from finished though. I guess it really depends on whether or not the scope of the project is just to remake the amount of content that was in FHBG NES and FHBG SDL or if it was intended on being longer.tepples wrote:NovaSquirrel: From what I remember, the Python version was shaping up fairly close to what you had in mind for the SDL version.

Yeah.. Image-Line don't want to call it that anymore is seems.dougeff wrote:You mean Fruity LoopsFL studio

Re: Ideas for my future NES projects
My conspiracy theory is that Image-Line pushed the "FL Studio" name once its lawyers heard from Kellogg's lawyers. (Follow your nose) That's also why we don't have audio production apps called Bigg Mixx or Frosted Mini-Beats.
