The cartridge is made from newly built elements (PCB, shells, etc.) all designed and hand assembled in the US by Catskull himself. The cartridge is region-free. It has been tested and working on NTSC SNES, PAL SNES, JP SFC, and Analogue Super Nt. The box and manuals are also printed and hand assembled in the US, using materials that make them as close as possible to the original SNES releases from the 90's!

Also, you can also buy only the ROM of the game if you prefer to play it on emulator:

If anyone is wondering, the game is made 100% in C, using the wonderful PVSNESlib SDK (https://github.com/alekmaul/pvsneslib)!

Whether you play it on real hardware or on emulator, I really hope you'll enjoy this game!

I beat it!

It's pretty simple, but surprisingly absorbing.

I did soft-lock it once, though. My shuriken got in between two orange shields at an angle to each other and wouldn't stop bouncing between them. Considering how much is onscreen, it seems fairly robust.

Thank you for this. I don't buy things much, but I couldn't pass it up at that price.

Thanks a lot for the feedback, it's always very motivating to hear back from players :)

I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I spend quite a lot of time fine-tuning / balancing the gameplay and the various levels / enemy waves, so I'm happy to hear it seems to work well!

Regarding the soft-lock, do you remember what boss you encountered it with?

It wasn't a boss. It was during a level. Two of the little orange shields that bounce your shuriken off at an angle just happened to be in exactly the right relative positioning to keep bouncing it between them indefinitely.

As it happens there were a couple of options for breaking out of it: (a) wait for another enemy to show up in between them and get hit, or (b) kill myself. I only considered it a soft-lock because in principle the two shields could have been the only two enemies left, which would have eliminated (a) as a possibility. In this case I got impatient waiting for (a) and accidentally did (b), and it was my last life so...

Thanks for the details, and sorry it lead to a game over!

This is an issue that I did find during beta testing, and I did some fixes to prevent it from happening again (IIRC, the bouncing position is slightly increased or decreased when both X and Y speed of the shuriken are set to prevent an infinite bounce loop). I'm really sorry to hear the fix wasn't 100% perfect despite all the beta testing I did :(.

So thanks a lot for reporting it!

I've just published a long article about making my SNES game Yo-Yo Shuriken.

It starts with the various steps I went through to design and program the game. Then, it details how we manufactured new cartridges (with box and manual) for a console whose commercial support ceased more than 20 years ago! (spoiler: all cartridges and boxes and hand-assembled for each order!)

You can read the article here:

I hope you'll enjoy it!

Incredible work and passion you show at creating Snes games. I'm somewhat like that towards the NintendoDS lol.
