I see, and the release dates are also very close so they definitely could have borrowed ideas and material from each others. SMB3 was released the same month in Japan, only days after in 1988.

That’s peculiar because SMB2 (U)’s final underground theme ended up quite similar to the original from Doki Doki Panic didn’t it?

Yeah they just used an updated variant of the underground theme just like how they updated the main theme with new instruments and an extra verse. But for the subspace theme they did change it to a Mario tune (the SMB1 main theme). I suppose it's the only BGM that had the Arabian nights feel of the original game, so changing it was a more important part of the Mariofication.
