HERE COMES A NEW CHALLENGER!

Another way to go about making a slideshow appeared this week: Rilden's tiled palette quantizer (live demo | discuss). It calculates which eight 15-color palettes best represent an image, producing 256*224*4/8 = 28672 bytes of CHR data, 32*28*3/8 = 336 bytes of attributes, and 120*2 = 240 bytes of palette, for a total of 28672+336+240 = 29248 bytes per image. A 6 MiB ExHiROM could hold 215.1 of these images in theory, or maybe 200 alongside reasonably-sized display code and music.
