Need help for another NESRGB color issue

Post by Koosan »

Hi there !
I'm new on this forum and quite a newbie in console modding, but done few things in the past.
I tried to solve the problem by myself, but after hours of unsolved tries, I finaly diceded to ask for you help !

I recently bought the NESRGB mod v.4 and installed it in my NES top loader console.

My test game is SUPER MARIO 3, original cartridge.
The menu screen is correct, no default on colors. Beautiful picture. When I start the game, the map is ok. Problem starts when entering level 1 : Everything works fine except a missing color, specialy arount the background sprites (my exemple show the lack of black border around the bushes, the bricks, the score bar in the lower part...)

Here is what I noticed :
- when I plug my NESRGB on TV with the original RCA composite, there is no picture defaults
- when I plug my NESRGB with SCART, on OSSD or CRT monitor, the problem appears
- when the console is "cold" , it happened few times that I get the right picture in the first seconds, then it glitches and goes back to missing color

Here is the pic of the default with the RGB out : (sorry for the poor quality, pic taken with my cell)

Here is pic OK with composite out :

I am turning crazy about looking for a solution. I checked several times my soldering work. Not perfect, I'm not a pro solderer  but cant find a short or missing connection.
Any lead to where to check precisely would be appreciated !
Thanks a lot guys !

Have you tried the CE# Timing fix of putting a 100pf ceramic cap between PPU pins 13 and 20? I also had problems with the backgrond and that fixed it for me. i still have other problems with graphics to sort out but that 100% did the trick as far as the background color goes! it was temperature related for me as well so it definitely seems like the same problem.

It's mentioned on Tim's site here https://etim.net.au/nesrgb/background_fault/nesrgb40/

(also seeing this makes me think it's more common than the 2% stated on the site)

Hope that fixes it!! :D

Hi,

@Koosan did you fix this issue?

@Coughdrop can you explain the fix a little more? Just solder a 100pf ceramic cap to PPU leg 13 & 20 on the bottom of the main board?

Thanks!
