Extract the Jay and Silent Bob: Mall Brawl ROM from Steam/GOG

Post by kjetil_f »

It's possible to buy this game on Steam and GOG, but it uses it's own emulator. Do anyone know how to extract the ROM so I can try it out in other emulators or an Everdrive?

You can look through the files to see if there are any uncompressed NES roms sitting in there, use a hex editor and look for 4E 45 53 1A ("NES", 0x1A)

If all else fails, you can open Process Memory for the game (HxD hex editor can do that) and look for an iNES header in RAM. The game is already dumped though, size is 384KB.

The ROM can be extracted from the Steam edition, but will not work fully, as the custom emulator plays all sound from MP3 files outside of the emulated NES environment. I assume the GOG edition will be similar.

The only version of the game that is known to work fully in normal NES emulators is a ROM dump of the $200 physical cartridge edition, which is a mapper 1 game wrapped in a mapper 446 envelope.
