Searching words like: "first", "second" does not give results

Post by krzysiobal »

I am reversing a cartridge that does four writes in a row at $5000 to switch a bank. I wanted to search at wiki if there is already something like that.
When I wrote in search field:

Code: Select all

5000 first
it returns pages that contain word "5000" but does not contain word "first".

Trying to search for words like "first", "second", "third" does not give results at all, but there do exist pages containing those word, for example:
https://www.nesdev.org/wiki/INES_Mapper_045

What is going on?

This isn’t an answer to your question, but a possible workaround.

Using Google, search for:

5000 first site:nesdev.org/wiki

I'm not sure there's much we can do to improve search on the wiki. Wikipedia uses an extension called CirrusSearch that requires Elasticsearch, but brizzo says Elasticsearch would essentially require another server. I'm not aware of any lightweight solutions to make search work much better. Last time I raised this issue, it was because of how annoyingly case-sensitive search on the wiki can be, and there is an extension specifically tailored to that, but it unfortunately doesn't help with other search problems.

Oh thank you, I was trying to do that but I was using https://www.nesdev.org/w/ as the wiki address and was quite surprised that Google does not show any results either. Looks like the /wiki/ mirror is more popular.

/wiki/ is the standard URL path and is used for what MediaWiki calls short URLs. The /w/ path is used for special pages and files.
