What flashcart for a famiclone?

Post by panikoman »

I just bought this FamiClone https://www.ebay.es/itm/388782290736
What flashcart should I buy? My intention is running my own games, mostly made in NROM.

I only have experience with the original Famicom Everdrive N8, but it has always been great as long as I had it and it comes in a 72-pin version as well. It had a good price, good mapper compatibility (which have improved with the years), good support and frequent updates for fixing bugs and adding new features. It's no longer updated though and there is a newer N8 Pro now which seems to be better. No guarantee that they work on your clone though.

If you only care about NROM, then the krzsiocart is sufficient and much cheaper than an Everdrive N8 Pro. I don't recommend an Everdrive N8 original in part because it lacks resistors necessary to prevent sprite corruption on some models of PPU, but I don't know whether that's a concern on your particular clone.

Unfortunately, I can't get krzsiocart anywhere. The N8 carts seem to be at 40€ in aliexpress.

I believe the AliExpress carts are bootleg clones of the original Everdrive N8. It will probably get the job done, but I think you may have problems if you try to update the firmware, and if the manufacturer didn't modify the design to add those resistors, you may also have sprite corruption in some systems.

An Aliexpress bootleg might be 3.3 V and damage a real NES (which is 5 V), but since you are using a clone I'm not sure it's an issue as many modern clones are 3.3 V (it's however an issue to use real 5 V cartridges with them).

The original N8 is no longer manufactured, only the Pro. It's $159 though, not so cheap anymore (I paid less than $100 for my original N8 years ago I think) and unfortunately they don't seem to have a budget alternative. The Pro supposedly has op-amps and stuff for proper expansion audio output levels (the original N8 is pretty useless for expansion audio), but that's more useful if you have a Famicom or a real NES that is modded for expansion audio.
