Worst video game music ever?

Post by Dwedit »

So of all the games you've played, what game do you think has the worst music?

I nominate Paperboy for the Apple II.

This is easily the winner: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fbCNKq7A5i4

You probably heard it before or didn't want it posted, but still, it sucks.

Wow. That's a good one.

I think it already beats 1942. (no disrespect to Ayako Mori)

I always thought that 1942's NES music was due to a bad dump or emulation problem.

I always thought it was a hidden message in Morse code trying to brainwash us (but seeing as it's a Japanese game developed by a Japanese company about attacking Japan, I have no idea what to think :|)

I would nominate this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GflY6rsGTu8
But honestly I never played this game.

In fact I can't think of any game I played of the top of my head which had absolutely terrible music. I think I would remember if there was one. I do remember many with really repetitive music though, but I wouldn't call it awful just because of that.

Paper Boy for Apple II had to work with the audio limitation and Crazy Bus is literally just random notes as far as I can tell. The 1942 music seems to just emulate a snare drum and a whistle. What else do you expect in a military march?
I would nominate Super Mario 3 Special for the GBC. Hard mode: Find an officially released game where the music is actually music for this nomination.

All you have to do is go to Google and type in worst NES music to find gems like this: Rad Gravity and Tagin' Dragon and Winter Games abuse sweep to be more annoying than the title screen of Excitebike.

VG Chartz has its own list if the ad doesn't freeze up on you.

1942's music was more recognizable for what it it's supposed to be in the arcade: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FXaw4Ev7Gw

Honestly I kinda like those Apple II Paperboy, and Rad Gravity examples.

Funny how Winter Games' music turned out so poorly on the NES. The port for Atari ST had pretty decent music, and it's a less powerful chip!

But they DID put Morse Codes in the sequel, and that was indeed a great game, which luckily wasn't developed by Micronics like the last game.

I'm not sure, we all know how good the games which are developed by Micornics are, but for some reasons the games they ported to consoles did somewhat play and look like their arcade counterparts, say, Makaimura, 1942, Exed Exes, Ikari and Commando. The fact that these games were mostly popular and sold well didn't help.

I'm an Apple ][ fan (definitely not a fan on their other products such as the Macs and iSomething though) and I do have a soft spot on Paperboy's music like rainwarrior, though there're still, better stuff on that system. I do like the Rad Gravity theme also.

Odd thing is, while the music in that Winter Games video IS horrible, the PTPTPTPT.... thing at the bottom of the game screen (which I suppose are in the overscan area for most real TV sets) gives me a psychedelic effect that I suddenly find the theme fit the game wonderfully.

I am absolutely in tears laughing right now.

I about died when I saw that Tagin' Dragon video; that is the stupidest music possible. And I seriously hope that Crazy Bus music was not an intentional arrangement of notes... Otherwise, that gets bumped up to first place immediately.

I've always thought Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance had horrible music, especially considering its predecessor, Circle of the Moon.

I didn't look very hard, but here's a video showing Crystalis on GBC vs. the NES version.

The world map music (which you can see at about 8:20) is SO ANNOYING. I remember having that stuck in my head for hours after playing and getting a headache.

Sounds to me like Adventures of Rad Gravity's actually trying. They just fell into the "atonal = futuristic" trap. Bleh.
