Video game related movies

Post by JimDaBim »

What movies do you know where video games play a bigger role?

I'm not talking about video game adaptions. This thread shall not be about movies like "Super Mario Bros.", "Mortal Kombat" or "Tomb Raider". I'm talking about movies where video games themselves are prominently featured.

Also, please no movies that deal only with fictional games that were invented specifically for the movie. No "Tron" or "Gamer".

And no documentaries like "The King of Kongs" please.

If you know a TV series or something like that which deals with the topic, it would be alright as well. As long as video games are not just a topic of one single episode.

O.k., let me start with the ones that I know:

"The Wizard"
Explanation should be needless.

"Arcade Gamer Fubuki"
Silly anime series (four episodes, self-contained) with lots of panty shots. Many real-world Sega games are featured.

"Joysticks"
Movie about people who hang out at an arcade. Various games are shown to be played.

"Wreck-It Ralph"
The main games that are featured are made-up, but the movie contains enough real-world games to be listed here.

So, what other movies do you know?

Livet i 8 bitar from 2002 is a personal favorite of mine. The black humor is a bit over the top for some people, but really cracks me up. Don't know how well the Swedish comedy style translates to English-speaking countries, but check it out if you can find subtitles for it.

I made a mistake early on in this topic. I acknowledge my mistake and am correcting it by splitting the drama out.

Do the game shows "Nick Arcade" and "Video Power" count?

"Arcade Gamer Fubuki"
This was actually a homage to Game Centre Arashi, which, as aired in the early 80's, featured games such as Space Invaders and Galaxian.

Maybe someone should make a version of "Wreck It Ralph" into a actual Vs.System game.

German subtitles would do too. At least for me.

I was more interested in the question where video games are presented in fiction. That's why for example I didn't include documentaries. After all, if I want to see real people playing games for real, I could just watch into the mirror while playing NES. :)

Right. Some kind of spinoff. I need to watch this one time too.

I was rather hoping for movies that feature real games. You know, the nostalgic value. Seeing those classics that you know yourself being featured in some kind of story. If it's just a made-up game, well, that nostalgic factor doesn't really apply of course.

Shouldn't the game rather run on similar hardware as "Donkey Kong" instead of the Vs. System?

Donkey Kong runs on the Radar Scope (MAME: dkong.c) board. Nintendo is reportedly have been inspired to make the Famicom by the pixel perfection of the ColecoVision port of Donkey Kong. So the Vs. System, which is nearly identical to the Famicom in behavior, would be at least as valid for the Fix-It franchise as Radar Scope. In fact, Donkey Kong 3 uses a pair of NES CPUs, one to make music and one to make samples.

This leaves Disney as the obstacle to a homebrew Fix-It game. And for the same reason, real games shown as games in a commercial movie that's not a documentary would usually mean product placement.

Not exactly centered around video games, but there was a pretty good chunk of Street Fighter featured in City Hunter .

There are some real games in that movie. Maybe not retro though.

Scott Pilgrim vs the World is probably my all time favorite game related movie.
I love Edgar Wright's style.

A nod goes to Wreck-It Ralph.
I also love the original Wargames (game/hacker related).
