I always need to input my info twice in order to get logged... the first time just seems to be ignored... what's up with that?

I never figured it out. When it happened to me it was apparantly caused by ZoneAlarm, because after I installed a newer version it stopped doing that.

When you log in to http://nesdev.com/bbs/, you will be redirected to http://nesdev.com/bbs/
Your browser won't send the session cookie to the new domain and you will be logged out.
Perhaps that's the problem?
