NESRGB in Famicom installation

This just arrived today:

Needless to say I am excited. Soon I'll be documenting cramming it into an original Famicom.
EDIT: Never mind, it looks like it's been done. Boring! Oh well, has anyone else gotten theirs yet?

Here's one of my boards, "crammed" into a Twin Famicom through an DIP extension cable. Still waiting for a DIN-8 connector to put where I desoldered the old "RF" DIN, as it was missing some of the necessary metal sockets for transmitting RGB + sound. I will be using a Neo Geo AES RGB SCART cable.

PS. I like your Youtube channel. ;)

My Famicom turned out okay, though a little wacky to fit it inside:

However, I only get black and white video on my television. On my Sony PVM broadcast monitor, I get full color and it looks great. My television does not like the chroma signal here, however. Any ideas?

EDIT: Meh, I just swapped out for a different TV. Works fine there.

The picture is great, though it's not quite perfect for FDS games. I see a little corruption there where it seems to float a little between deciding if the current pixel is a sprite or background.

Have you soldered J5? About the jittering, try to keep the cables at a minimal length, especially the one going from pin 21 (video out). If you can't keep it short, maybe you can use a shielded cable?

J5 is soldered, though I see absolutely no difference with it open.

When I play Parodius Da and get the full-screen bomb which makes the whole screen white, the picture rolls briefly. I wonder if Luma is too strong? Could this affect the TV's processing of Chroma, maybe using luma as a reference level that is too high?

Rolling implies vsync is malformed somehow ... I don't suppose you have an oscilloscope?

I actually do. What would you like me to look for on it?

I think before I get much further I'm going to replace the terrible 5V external switcher I'm using with a nice TI PTH08080 and ensure I have a solid 5V before trying to chase more complicated issues. Bad / screwy power can ruin everything else.

That's definitely true.

I was arbitrarily assuming that there was a highpass somewhere inline with the vsync pulse, and then it was returning to zero before the end of vsync.

After lots of debugging sessions, my NES finally displayed the lovely RGB signal yesterday night. This evening has consisted of finalizing the connectors and gaming on my big flatscreen TV for the first time without cringing at how badly it's showing the composite signal... :)

I installed the sound connector as well, but not sure I like the non-filtered sound output. It's a fun curiosity to pair the raw sound output with the raw RGB output, but I've come to love the mellow low-pass filtered sound too much after all years of NES gaming.

Anyway, big thanks to Tim for offering us this awesome mod, and TheFox for the original idea!

By the way, does anyone know a good upscaler that could produce pixel perfect HDMI output from the NESRGB?

I decided to install my second and last board into my AV Famicom. I tested it without the extra regulator at first but I found that the consoles back became quite warm after a while. Better safe than sorry. I also attached some pixel porn taken off my TV.

Guess the game? Or maybe not guess, either you know it or don't.
That would be "Kame no Ongaeshi" if you're showing us RGB Famicom screenshots.

Isn't that XyzxY in the US?

Also, this whole thread has been NES porn. I'm all hunched over my monitor at work trying not to let my co-workers see what I'm looking at :)

Close: Xexyz.

As for actual NES porn, Paheal had Mega Man but not Xexyz.
