Apparently, I applied two code changes, confirmed that it worked, then backed out the second one (because it appeared to be redundant) without rechecking that it was still working; it would seem that the second code change was what actually fixed the bug, so now it's reapplied and it works correctly.
This is what happens when you try to write patches late at night when you've got to get up early for work the next day.
