Hey guys,
just stumbled over this :

Sounds nice right?

Yes, it does. It would be nice to see a tracker built specifically for making SNES music.

This is a very alpha build of a tracker we are continuing to work on for the SNES. Not even close to beta - it currently DC biases samples to past standard voltages and randomly damages speaker coils and headphones. Don't worry - this track is sample fixed and doesn't have this bug

It also mem leaks causing full windows lock ups and sometimes crashes out on compile... but otherwise is a very solid piece of software when actually in use for making tunes.
The SPC can damage speakers in this way?
I also love the irony with a mem-leaking hard-locking piece of software being deemed "solid".

I don't think so?
jwdonal's redrawn schematic shows a highpass filter of corner frequency 16Hz on the output path of the SNES.
Could be something else going on, I guess.

Nope, just all audio amplifiers in the world will cancel any DC.
Only if you build your own custom home-made amplifier and forget to filter out DC then you can risk to damage speakers.

Wouldn't the speaker coil itself filter DC?

Even if not the speaker, some amplifiers in the signal path might not like out-of-spec voltages.

I don't think voltages produced by your sound card via software are likely to be out of spec, though.

No: a fixed DC voltage applied to a speaker coil will cause a fixed deformation from the rest position. At least for speakers that don't include a crossover, anyway.
That's not the real problem with it, though: the DC portion would dissipated as heat in the speaker coil (standard V²÷R) which is just wasted energy and could plausibly cause the speaker to overheat, especially because there's usually no good way to emit waste heat from inside the speaker enclosure.
