Gold is used because it is resistant to corrosion. It's not a lot of gold, and it's more than just gold, but yes, it does contain real gold.

Let's try a different question: Why do you ask? What would change if it were, or weren't, real gold?

Personally I think it's such a waste to use gold for jewelry and stuff, when it should be reserved for electronics instead, given it's amazing electrical and corrosion resistance properties :)

Electrical properites of gold are worse than copper actually, but silver is better than copper (but tarnishes easily). Main thing about gold plating is the corrosion resistance.

The electrical conductivity of gold is a bit worse than copper and silver (in that order), but what matters is that copper and silver are awful when it comes to corrosion and rust, but gold is amazing in this regard.

I'm sure the answer is "it depends", but does anyone have an opinion on what a good plating thickness for new boards? I was thinking of specifying 5 microns nickel and 1.3 microns gold, I don't know if there's any use going with more. I can't exactly measure what Nintendo used, but I know I've seen carts where the gold was mostly gone.
