I got a Konami 24 Double Dribble and to my surprise, when I opened it up... it was a glob top!

Its the normal Konami board, but instead of a chip, soldered over it is a glop top on a really thin PCB over where the chip would have gone. I took some pics of it. Anyone else ever encounter this?

Was this done because the original chip was bad and the game was 'serviced' and replaced with a glob top?

A surprising number of licensed Famicom releases were released using chip-on-board. But outside of Japan, they're relatively unknown.

Mine looks the most like Puzzle, the PRG side. But this is an official NES cart, but the little glob top tab doesnt look like it has a model number. I think it says 80005, but I cant tell. Ill have to upload it later.

That's neat, there's an adapter for it. I don't know how big the price jump is between a blob on the PCB versus on an adapter board like that compared to an actual packaged ROM.
