This game is awesome! Wow, if it was released on Humble Bundle as a DRM-free ROM or a DRM-free ROM merged with a NES>Real-hardware JIT compiler/emulator thing, I'd so buy it!

Wow, this is looking like great fun! Congratulations! And the music is really great too. The castle tune reminded me a little of the
overworld theme of Realmz, that hits a certain nostalgic string inside me.

oddly enough, i had that song in winamp at the time when i composed it. though the theme itself is intended to be a remix of the older version of vn2 level music.

Opinions, please. I'm considering changing the graphics for Level 1. I've never been happy with the hills. Here's what the old version looks like...

- L1old.png (3.29 KiB) Viewed 2479 times
And, here are the new concepts...

- L1new.png (4.7 KiB) Viewed 2479 times

- L1new2.png (5.8 KiB) Viewed 2479 times
The shadow, under the blocks, is a thing you can slide under. The fence things would replace the hills. You can jump on them, enemies will also. The gray blocks would be more rare than this picture shows.
Possibly, would add parallax scrolling on the hills.

I like the background hills a lot, especially the broken outline.
The diagonal black pattern on the foreground feels like a pattern for pattern's sake, and detracts more than it help.

I'm sorry to say, but I'm not a big fun of the new graphics... While some elements look fine, they're clashing badly against each other. The hills are nice, and so are the trees, but one being outlined and the other being shaded kinda prevents them from looking good together. The orange things (fences?) look fine too, but the total lack of perspective as they are placed farther away on the field is pretty confusing. Speaking of confusing, that rock pattern is my biggest gripe with these graphics... They appear to depict a "Q*bert style" 3D formation that doesn't look particularly good (too few colors?) or makes any sense in the context it's in, it almost looks like a window to another dimension or something.
Another aspect in which different elements disagree is realism. The grass is reasonably realistic, with seemingly random dithering and lack of discernible details, while mostly everything else is stylized. The old graphics were simpler, but were also more harmonious and direct to the point. It was easy to tell what everything was and to predict how the player would interact with the environment.
If you're really set on this graphical overhaul, my advice is that you try to stick to a well defined style. Make up your mind regarding shading (none, cartoon, volumetric, etc.) and realism.

I wanted to do something more interesting than straight horizontal and vertical line bricks.

I really like the new backgrounds, it's much less "generic platformer" and more in style with the theme of the game. Only the rocks look weird, the outline doesn't mesh well with the 3D look of the texture.
edit: Wow, I'm getting strong Gimmick! vibes from that soundtrack. Very good job!

Really excellent mastery of "sunsoft bass"!
