Nice Guy

It's really crazy actually knowing that you aren't just a username. I always imagined you to be a much smaller person. You kind of remind me of a football player or something.

Also, are you a "nice guy"?

"Nice Guys TM" is a stupid internet meme that needs to die.

I've never heard of it until then. I see you've had some trouble with it, so I probably shouldn't have made a joke.

Oh, okay. Hadn't realized this was that kind of forum. I'll remember not to get too attached to this place.
Yeah I was wondering about that one too. It's the first time I've seen something being censored here. Was it really necessary?

Seriously though can we sit down and have a conversation about this censorship policy somewhere appropriate? I've just been made very uncomfortable by this and would like to know where this line of "offensiveness" is being drawn and why.

Is there any non-misogynist way of saying that I got harassed a lot by people who call themselves feminists?

Is there any way of having you realize that what you'd said was sexist?

"Internet Feminists" didn't invent the "Nice Guy" stereotype or even the name (which was self-chosen). The only thing you can blame "internet feminists" for is the snide summary ("A 'Nice Guy' is a person who doesn't understand that 'being a decent human being' doesn't entitle you to sex").

ANYWAY, can we split out the sexism/censorship thread into General Discussion or something? Posts 148716, 148728, 148748, 148754, 148756, 148765, half of 148904, half of 148905, 148908, 148909, half of 148911, and my post here would make sense to move.

phpBB does not support splitting "half of" a post.

You can delete half of a post after you've created the topic split, right?

Feminism is a movement, not a gender. There are tons of anti-feminist women out there.

Better make that split quick. It's already getting heated. I switched around my posts to make the split easier.

So, am I now free to call the censorship decision into question, or would that just necessitate yet another split? Should I start another thread about it and save the trouble? Or if you would prefer, I would also welcome the opportunity to discuss the matter more directly, should any of the administration wish to entertain that prospect. Perhaps we can save a lot of time and drama.

(edit: If you don't understand what it is I'm upset about, it's the idea that what you say around here can be silenced by others on the forum if they happen to disagree with you just by virtue of "complaining enough". "Removed due to multiple complaints" is NEVER a valid reason. "Removed because content violates our Terms of Service" is more like it - something that can be objectively evaluated against rules that are plainly stated, not some kind of sadistic popularity contest. I don't care if seven billion people complain; if the words have a right to be there then leave them alone.)

On-topic: "Nice guy" has a lot of varying meanings these days, ranging from compliment to insult to medical condition. I find most of what I've read on the subject to be highly offensive - implying that every positive action I've ever made in my life was just a coverup for sexual motives. (In fact I take that back; it's not "offensive", it's "repulsive".)

As far as I'm concerned, anybody who uses the term "nice guy" in such a way is the one committing an unforgivable act of sexism; implying that "niceness" in males is a BAD thing, that it is universally dishonest and that we're incapable of expressing genuine kindness or compassion, or the simple belief that it is good to cooperate and help others.

Criticizing feminism on the other hand, is not offensive in and of itself. Feminists are people, flawed people like everyone else. Their cause has generally been righteous and justified, but in parts of the world like North America where most of their objectives have been realized, it becomes very easy for things to start crossing a line into just another form of discrimination. Having the moral high ground gave their movement a LOT of influence and power. As positive change is made the ethical motive fades, and with it fades that power. Nobody likes to lose power. It takes one hell of a pure, noble soul to simply hand it over, even if that's the right thing to do. Instead you will often see these former paragons of justice turn into the very thing they fought against once they've had a taste of being on top.

To summarize: There is nothing inherently evil about either men or women, at least no more so than the evil that is inherent in all human life.
