Hey, guys! Today, I've got something special for you. I would like to present:
OBSCURE ROOM
A show, where I review obscure retro games, whether they're rare gems, horrible catastrophies or... just OK. Now you might be saying to yourselves "What? Another one?" Well, yeah, the idea of reviewing video games is quite old, but a good enough show can always be watched by many people, as a lot of reviewers have proven it. So, I'll give my own take on it and see if it's any good.
I have finished the first two episodes. The first games I review are "Astyanax" and "Kick Master" for the NES. These are two games with very similar ideas, but very different execution and it's interesting to know how they turned out.
Astyanax: https://youtu.be/seaJU9GqgmQ
Kick Master: https://youtu.be/jde6mz59WTU
Give the episodes a watch and tell me, if they're any good. What is good and what can be improved? I would really appreciate your comments and criticisms.
NOTE: I won't be able to respond to them soon, because I'll be outside of town for the next 10 days and I won't have wi-fi, but I will check them out, when I get back.
I hope you enjoy these first two episodes. I hope to make more.
Take care!

Does this count as an "obscure retro game"?

Or at least this?

Hi, AlienX,
I've watched a lot of similar videos before. I think it was pretty good. At least as good as other review videos I've seen. Sound quality was good. Images were good. Commentary was good. It was slightly longer than I'd prefer, but that's ok.

Oh, and you know what games I'd like to see reviewed...homebrew NES games (hint, hint)
Edit - not mine BTW. My games suck. I mean the other games here. Lizard. Mad wizard. Super bat puncher. Thwaite. Dpad Hero. Etc.

This would actually be a great idea.dougeff wrote:Oh, and you know what games I'd like to see reviewed...homebrew NES games (hint, hint)

Overall I liked the videos. Looking forward to seeing more.

I only skimmed through the videos, but I noticed that in both videos you talked about boss strategies. I think that's generally speaking a bad idea for a video that's supposed to be a review and not a walkthrough. Sometimes it's unavoidable I guess, but I would try to not go into details about how to beat any part of the game and instead focus on how good the game mechanics, graphics, audio, story, etc are on a more abstract level. I know explaining the gameplay in detail is an easy way to get content (and I've seen that in a lot of more or less obscure YouTube reviews), but I think you should avoid it. You don't want to spoil the game in a review.
BTW the 2nd link points to a wrong video.

Not sure about the level of obscurity of these, but I'd never played them until maybe 6 months ago:

Well, I got Wi-Fi for a while. Thanks for liking this show! More episodes will come and I hope it can take off! Sorry for accidentally posting the same link twice. I posted that in a hurry. Anyway, the link to the "Kickmaster" review has been added, so go watch the video(if you didn't already) and tell me what you think!
And, yes, all the games you've shown are obscure enough, so I'll probably review them in the future. The homebrew ones are new, but they might get some episodes.

Well, that was kind of what I was going for, a sort of mix between review and walkthrough. When I review games, I want to show them in their entirety, similar to how the Nostalgia Critic reviews movies, or(for a better example) the Completionist reviews games. But I see why you wouldn't want the game spoiled, so I'll either be a bit more abstract or add a spoiler warning, when I get to the end of the game. I will go into detail, when the game is bad and you wouldn't want to play it anyway.thefox wrote:I only skimmed through the videos, but I noticed that in both videos you talked about boss strategies.
