Today, via Slashdot, I discovered an editorial by Geoffrey A. Fowler in The Wall Street Journal titled "We Need the Right to Repair Our Gadgets". One line in the last couple paragraphs made me smile: "But [soldering in new capacitors] honestly wasn’t any harder than using a glue gun."
But seriously, the good news of this editorial is that the mainstream media has finally become willing to expose manufacturers for using copyright to interfere with people's right to repair electronic products. I wonder how much of this courage is due to the spinoff of Dow Jones and the rest of News Corp from Fox at the end of 2013, so that WSJ doesn't have to toe the Hollywood copyright maximalist line anymore.
