Just FYI, I was apparently tired or something because I didn't read your post properly, or I didn't use higan properly, or something. Actually pressing A with my controller mapped causes the colour to change to red partway across the screen. So if real hardware doesn't do that, it means this is an inaccuracy in higan (v110).
Doesn't really change the conclusion, because real hardware is of course the only target that really matters.
