Say the barrel is pointed four-fifths of the way from the left side of the screen. The light would come in at 0.8, 1.8, 2.8, 3.8, ... for the 240p monitor or 0.4, 1.4, 2.4, 3.4, ... for the 480p monitor showing 100% scanlines. Both would trigger a 15.7 kHz resonator.

And unlike with the Super Scope, Zapper games don't measure horizontal position, so games wouldn't be able to tell the difference between activation at 2.4 and activation at 2.8. In Zap Ruder's XY test, I tried to use an unrolled loop to find the start of light in 18-dot (6-cycle) units. It worked in some emulators, but on a real 240p monitor, the time of start of light was too noisy to be useful, darting back and forth by 1/3 of a scanline as I held the gun in place.
