The N64 unquestionably had a far more advanced and powerful chipset, but it had cartridges instead of CDs, which meant a lot less FMV, Red Book audio, interminable loading screens, scratched games and failing drives. It passed on one of that generation's big advances in favour of doing the other one right (and still managed to nerf itself somewhat with its heavily bottlenecked architecture and inefficient official microcode).

It introduced the thumbstick, but only one and in a configuration not seen since. Sony promptly copied the idea, adding the same Sony creative magic they had applied to the SNES shoulder buttons when designing the basic PlayStation controller, and the result was the Dual Analog. After Star Fox 64 popularized rumble, the Dual Shock quickly replaced the Dual Analog.

Somewhat ironically, the audio subsystem in the SNES was upgraded for the PlayStation, while the N64 just had the graphics chip handle it - nowadays it'd be the CPU handling it, I think, but not having a dedicated audio processor is definitely characteristic of modern game systems. IIRC the PlayStation 4 has the same amount of RAM dedicated to audio as the SNES did... Though the use cases tend to be reversed nowadays; the PlayStation did things the modern way with a lot of streaming music, while the N64 had to use mainly sequenced music due to the lack of ROM.

None of that is really news to anyone here; I guess I just like to hear myself talk. Anyway I imagine the available games would figure in an assessment of the feel of a system...

Did you read the first thing? Personal rating.
I won't go deep in the history of both + PS2.

Just like how Alaska is arguably bigger than Rhode Island?

To bad the music is messed up. I'd have thought the PlayStation would be more than powerful enough to mix the sound in software.
