Oh ha ha right I forgot that PS3 technically had region locking for game discs but it was an almost entirely unused feature. (Wikipedia has a list that I'm sure isn't complete, but gives a good idea of the rarity.) Its discs were de facto region free. Yes, downloadable stuff was a bit different in that respect.

In that if I take a US NES game I can't use it on a Famicom, if I take a NES controller I can't use it on a Famicom.
For homebrewers a lot of these don't have to be different, though.

We should probably point out that most NES/Famicom emulators don't even have some kind of Famicom or NES setting. They are close enough to support both at the same time with no changes.

But but but... actually you can. Though this is not officially supported, you can do this by using only official products, that if you ply open certain carts of 1st party NES games, you get a game cart that's directly playable on a Famicom and an adapter to play Famicom games on a NES.

Exactly that. I play NES games on my Famicom using NES controllers. And I play Famicom games on my NES, too. Sure, I use an adapter for the games, but it's completely passive. Meanwhile the controllers plug right in. And as Gilbert correctly pointed out, literal Famicom PCBs have been released in the west, marketed as NES games.
A composite video signal doesn't stop being a composite video signal because you connect it via scart or bnc connectors instead of rca.

Essentially, if you ask me if I have the NES version of Rolling Thunder, I will tell you yes, because I have the Famicom cartridge. If you ask me if I have the US release, I will tell you no. I have the only with slightly better sound. :3
Treating them like they are as different as N64 and 3DO only serves to confuse people into starting topics like this. :P
