Suggestions and improvments for NES Cart DB site

Post by BootGod »

It looks like I'll have some time to do some work on the website coming up.

Please post any ideas for things you'd like to see there or things that need improvement.

- Complete the list and make boxes and covers user-contribuable so everyone can contribute.
- Add European and Japanese games
- Add pictures of each game's PCB
Useless, lumbering half-wits don't scare us.

From what I can see...

That's pretty much up to the site's users.

Is this already true?

Some European games are already in the database.

No comment here.
Warning: I am not a serious developer (yet), but CS and EE really interest me.
I was -_pentium5.1_- until I screwed up. This is why I screwed up. ^_^

I think Japanese games are espacially important, since the NES and basically all its games are from Japan.

EDIT : What are people supposed to do when they forgot their passwords ? Looks like I've mistaped mine, and it won't come up with any variation of it that I tried. There weren't a "password confirmation" field, nor a confirmation e-mail to say I'm well subscriben so this is confusing.

Wouldn't the best solution be to make the Cart DB part of the NESDev Wiki? That way, anyone who wants to could contribute.

the nesdev wiki is hosted on Quietust site, which is different than bootgods, and different from nesdev.parodus. perhaps a link on the wiki would be nice.

suggestions to the site:

download the database, but i think you already got that request from me.

nothing else comes to mind now.

Yep, anyone can submit images for a profile, you just need to be logged in.

This is something that does need to be added. As well as other user specific options. For instance, I'm planning on the user being able to set their desired image resolution and format to make image browsing a little more bearable. Especially considering my latest scans are 300 dpi PNG's.

I can email you your password in the mean time.

I do plan on having it hosted "professionally" or whatever you want to call it once I feel it's ready. If someone wants to add a link to it from the wiki, I'm fine with that.

Yep, as of now, you have to use the software for this. Allowing a custom text version download from the site should be do-able, but I think the binary version is going to be software only.

It is already possible to do this just like any other image. I will be adding PCB pics of my carts as soon as I get a decent camera to do so. I want to have profiles for each board type as well, with pictures and info like kevtris has in his mapper database.

As for the posts about allowing anyone to contribute: Anyone with a CopyNES can contribute. I originally allowed contributions from anyone by allowing them to load a ROM rather than download from a CopyNES, as at the time I didn't even have one yet. But once I had one, this came back and bit me in the ass because some ROMs I had used turned out to be bad and whatnot. So I scrapped that.

And what computer platforms will the software run on?

If I want to contribute, say, box scans or manual transcriptions, do I have to pay to have a CopyNES made in order to do that?

is it possible to use a form similar to the search and then make the database download from that as a link ?

Hey, you don't even need a camera to place PCB pictures : The PCB is thin enough to be scanned in the cartridge case when you open it. You'd definitely need a camera to make sure damage nothing if you want picture of the back of the PCB, but that wouldn't be very interesting, only the front would be fine.

Only Windows 2k/XP (maybe 98 with some updates) at the moment.

No, you just need to have a CopyNES to create a profile. Any registered user can sumbit images.

Yep I'm sure it will be something like that, but as I said, it will likely be text-only.

I've noticed that some scanners are able to take decent scans of PCB's. Unfortunately, mine is not one of them. The faces of the chips come out fine, but the rest of the board and traces suffer from a major depth-of-field effect rendering them very blurry.
