problemkaputt.de is gone

Post by nocash »

Hmm, I was just browsing through some folders via Core FTP LE, and after returning to the top level folder of my webpage... most folders and files seem to have disappeared... I do have a backup of the webpage on my harddisk, but the public webpage is gone for now, whoops.

Well, that's making things easier, my webhoster is shutting down soon due to heath issues anyways, so now I can move to a new host without needing to worry about retrieving any important data from the old webpage. I hope to be back online next week.

I haven't decided where to mave to yet. I need something cheap (preferable hosting and domain for 50 cents/month), don't need much storage (250MB or max 1GB should be more than enough), with at least one mailbox and some email addresses, and it should be in germany or europe (mostly to easy paying the yearly fees).

So far I have found two cheap webhosters - bitpalace.net and onyxhosting.de - at the moment, I would tend to onyxhosting, unless somebody can recommend other/better hosts...?

I feel like there should be trustworthy free static html hosting options, but finding ones I trust to not change the pricing on later is more difficult.

GitHub Pages might be an option.

Github Pages is really easy for static websites. If you have a domain, you can even point it there with a CNAME. Effectively get free web hosting, as long as you buy the domain elsewhere. I have my domain through Dreamhost.

Didn't know that. Sounds interesting... except github is always spear-heading not to support older computers (I wouldn't feel comfortable with having a webpage if I couldn't access it myself).

I use Digital Ocean for my site. I don't remember what it costs (our son handles it), but it's a lot cheaper than just the electric bill of hosting it on a PC in our garage was, and the Digital Ocean connection speed is much, much faster than our connection at home is, so if multiple visitors are downloading stuff at the same time, they're not kept waiting.

Cheapest Digital Ocean plan is $5/month and comes with 1 GB RAM, 25 GB SSD, and 1 TB/mo of transfer. Worst part is you have to do the server administration stuff yourself (installing apache etc).

50cent/mo for both hosting and domain is dreaming, when just a domain goes for ~10/year.

How about this: https://wint.global/
It's got a nice plan for 55 cents/month :D

I’ve been using infinity free for https://neshomebrew.ca since nintendoage shut down. Free version has limitations, but for static websites it’s been working pretty good!

I use Neocities.

Its free plan is limited, but for static websites like yours, it's pretty fine.

I asked in the GB Dev organization and we'd be willing to sponsor you with hosting. I'd also be willing to host on my personal server as a second option. My server is gg8.se and currently hosts a GB Dev forum that you may have seen, and has mirrors of some GB dev sites that have gone down. If either of those options are of interest to you, I'm assuming you prefer to not manage the server fully, but just have a place to upload files?

No, that's real. The domain is included, my old hoster did have that, too, 0.49 eur/month. I don't know how they handle support and logistics for that price. I needed to contact support only once in 5 years, which worked okay (plus several failed attempts begging them to charge the yearly fees from my bank account, which merely resulted in all outstanding invoices getting cancelled after some timeout period, I've paid them anyways after noticing that they had never charged any money for several years).

Hmmm, that's 6 cent more, but also has more gigabytes than I could ever need, and it says something about co2 neutrality, and they seem to be around since 2016, and hopefully won't shut down, or increase prices anytime soon. And it seems to be related to a wind & solar company (nice), owned by... a billionaire? Hmmm, but, well, okay, I've just registered there.

Coincidentally, the old hoster seems to have recently auto-installed a backup of the deleted data. So the webpage is back working currently, but will be down again when the domain transfer takes place (hopefully in the next 1-2 days).

Oh, and somebody has PMed a sample github page. I does support http (unlike the usual inaccessible https-only github pages), and ftp seems to work too (at least it's showing a login prompt, and doesn't seem to require the defunct github user interface). Not so bad. I am not sure if it does support POP3 email, and PHP, and if it would be actually cheaper (when renting a domain name for it). I will stick with the new hoster, but those github pages could be an interesting option.

Thanks to everybody who has offered free hosting! I am glad to know that there are people who could help out! Anyways I've picked the paid version because it does perhaps have some more admin rights, and, it's about the only unneccessary consumer good that I've paid for in past 2-3 years.

Github pages are intended to be static HTML only, no cgi-bin, no other services. Put data in using git or subversion via ssh, 3rd parties can view pages using https or ... apparently you can't opt back into plain http delivery.

Hi Martin, if it is not too late I can highly recommend https://uberspace.de/ for hosting.
You can choose the amount you pay and can also change this amount every month.
The support and options are very great.

Best regards
