Famicombox Ice Hockey and Volleyball

Post by kmg »

Anybody have any info on these cartridges? Based on how often Ice Hockey pops up in auctions it doesn't seem like the rarest of Famicombox games. Like Pro Wres I assume this is a unique version of Ice Hockey and has JPN as a playable team. Is it still undumped? Same question for Volleyball.

And more broadly is anybody keeping track of which Famicombox games match which Famicom dumps? For instance it looks like Mahjong matches the last revision based on the chip labels. I'd like to compile a list.

Both of these are somewhat rare and would be fairly expensive to acquire. I know one person with an Ice Hockey who may be able to dump it, and know someone who knows someone with Ice Hockey and Volleyball, so perhaps it'll be possible to get dumps through them. I'm already rather interested in getting dumps of the various FamicomBox games to see if there are unique revisions, but hadn't considered tracking which version is on each.

I have 15 of the more common carts, myself, that I can dump for revision information (though 5 of them are locked inside a FamicomBox I haven't been able to get open yet). After recently frying a cartridge in a FamicomBox because of the voltage on EXP pins, though, I'm being extra cautious and will need to make sure the EXP pin connections on FamicomBox carts are safe in an INLretro.

Well if you do dump any of them and/or have info about CRCs from other sources I'd be interested to hear. I'm also interested in PCB photos if anyone has or takes any. I'm presently trying to compile an authentic software list for MAME and I'd like it to be more than my wild stabs in the dark.

So far from scouring the known pages and image search I've rounded up at least some photo for 14 of the 38 known games. This blog entry is the most interesting find by far: http://slpcat3.blog117.fc2.com/blog-entry-430.html. Among other points of interest in those photos: 1943 with vertical mirroring (suggesting the code is modified), Super Chinese 2 with its TLEPROM board and MMC3B, CNROM Twinbee.

SSS-* PCB photos I've found: 1943, Argos no Senshi, Excitebike, F-1 Race, Gradius, Mahjong, Makaimura, Mario Bros, Pro Wres, Super Chinese 2, SMB, Takahashi Meijin, TwinBee, Volleyball.

j4m13c0 has been dumping his FamicomBox carts and Ice Hockey looks to be the same as the US version. Is there a reason you thought it had a Japan-specific team?

I'll post more detailed information later, but I've had two interesting findings so far:
- Fighting Golf is the same as the J version, except it has a Nintendo header added.
- Knight Rider is the same as the J version except it has a Nintendo header added and uses a 128 KB PRG EPROM where banks 0-3 are all $FF. The normal J cart only has 64 KB PRG, though because both ROMs use banks 4-7, it works either way. If the game has a bug where it uses banks 0-3, then the FamicomBox version will behave differently.

No, Ice Hockey was just a hunch. I'm a bit surprised though because I figured Japanese people would want Japan as an option in the game. That being said, I've seen footage of FamicomBox Volleyball and it does have the FDS team selection list and things like "1986" and "Famicom" behind the court, so it should be different from the US cart.

Cool, thank you. Those are interesting findings. The F-1 Race PCB image I saw had two 27C256 EPROMs, so I wonder if $FF padding will be the norm. It's NROM and has the 128Kb jumper setting.

j4m13c0 dumped 20 of the carts and I've sorted through them to identify revisions and any unique data. Except for the 2 I mentioned earlier (and Pro Wres, as previously known), everything is a standard release version.

Thanks to j4m13c0 for taking the time to dump all of them and to you for sifting through the details. It's nice to have things confirmed and properly documented.

For the remaining games other than Volleyball, maybe the pattern will hold: older games that are in the menu cart's checksum list will be the unmodified latest Japanese release (in 1986), and newer one's will have modified headers if necessary but otherwise match. Although I'm still curious about what appears to be "incorrect" mirroring on the 1943 cartridge.

It looks like Argos no Senshi, Gradius, Ninja Ryukenden, Punch Out, and Volleyball are all games without header checksums and aren't in the menu cart's checksum database. So it seems the FamicomBox editions must be undumped variants with corrected headers at least.

I think the same thing; anything not in the database will need a header to work, so those must have been modified.

Do we know if there is actually a Punch-Out!! release district from the Mike Tyson's version? I've seen it mentioned online, but I don't think I've seen one for sale yet nor any images.

The 1943 mirroring is definitely strange. I checked my Makaimura board, which uses the same PCB, and it has the same H pad filled despite the opposite mirroring. I'll be very interested to see a dump of this, but it's a $500 game, so it won't be easy to come by.

There are definitely two different labels. Here's the one without Mike Tyson on the far left: https://twitter.com/Cheesemeister3k/sta ... 52/photo/3. Presumably it's the normal change after the Tyson license agreement ended?

The 1943 cart made me so curious I inspected the FamicomBox schematic a bit to see if maybe the menu cart had some way of overriding the mirroring. If you look in the Japanese Famicom dump of 1943 it has a proper header and is correctly marked with the horizontal mirroring bit, so I thought maybe it could decide in software somehow based on that. My schematic reading skills aren't so great but it looks like there are two 74LS251s that simply pick the active cart's HV pin (aka CIRAM A10 to NES). Anyway, the proper header in the Famicom game implies that the FamicomBox version could be the same, but the physical board's solder pads imply the opposite. It's a mystery.

As far as I know, mirroring is only controlled by the active cartridge and the mirroring bit in the header is fully unused.

All of the games present in both sets of dumps match: Baseball, Donkey Kong, Duck Hunt, F1 Race, Fighting Golf*, Golf, Ice Hockey, Mahjong, Makaimura, Mario Bros., Pro Wres, Super Mario Bros, Takahashi Meijin no Bouken-jima, Tennis, Wild Gunman, Wrecking Crew. (*Fighting Golf's CHR chip was bad, but the previous dump only showed differences in the PRG, which this matches.)

This set also includes 10 FamicomStation dumps. All 10 of these match the FamicomBox equivalents: Baseball, Donkey Kong, Duck Hunt, Golf, Mahjong, Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros., Tennis, Wild Gunman, Wrecking Crew.

The new FamicomBox dumps in this set are: Argos no Senshi, Gomoku Narabe Renju, Gradius, Hogan's Alley, Ninja Ryuukenden, Rockman, Soccer League: Winner's Cup, Super Chinese 2, TwinBee, Volleyball. Of these, Gomoku Narabe Renju, Hogan's Alley, Rockman, Soccer League: Winner's Cup, and Super Chinese 2 match known releases.

Argos no Senshi is the same as Argos no Senshi - Hachamecha Daishingeki (Japan) aside from the Nintendo header added at PRG $1FFE0:
00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 41 52 55 47 4F 53 55 66 4B 00 00 38 02 01 06 9B 24

Gradius' PRG has significant differences compared to Gradius (Japan). Things have been moved around so much that it's difficult to compare to see what meaningful changes there might be. A Nintendo header has been added at PRG $7FE0, which collides with data in the consumer release, necessitating at least some things moving. Header data:
00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 47 52 41 44 49 55 53 C1 56 E7 F9 22 01 01 06 A4 52

Ninja Ryuukenden is the same as Ninja Ryuukenden (Japan) aside from the Nintendo header added at PRG $1FFE0:
4E 49 4E 4A 41 20 52 59 55 4B 45 4E 44 45 4E 20 FB 3A 00 FF 33 04 01 0F 9B 1F

TwinBee's PRG has significant differences compared to TwinBee (Japan). This looks similar in scope to the differences in Gradius. There's a version number and date in the consumer version at the start that isn't present here, which shifts everything forward 17 bytes. It looks like some of the startup code has been rewritten; memory clearing is now done differently. Not sure what else is different. There's now a header at PRG $7FE0:
00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 54 57 49 4E 42 45 45 E2 AE B3 A0 21 81 01 06 A4 60

Volleyball, like Pro Wrestling, appears to be a unique cartridge version of the Japanese FDS release. The flags on the team select screen are in the same order as the FDS version, which means Japan is selected by default, which affects the left player on the title screen. Compared to the Volleyball (UE) cart release, the ROM is actually fairly similar. Some stuff at the end has been moved to free up space for the Nintendo header at PRG $7FE0. There's some weird code in the UE version at PRG $001A that will trigger an infinite loop if CHR $0178 is $1B, and otherwise writes $20 to $803D, like it expects to be on something other than NROM (and with bus conflicts). This code doesn't look like it's executed, though; it's jumped over. The FamicomBox version NOPs this whole section out, including the jump over it, so it'll execute the string of NOPs. There's some different palette data, probably for the reordered teams. Reordered team names. A few other changes I'm not sure about. Header data:
FF FF FF FF FF 56 4F 4C 4C 45 59 20 42 41 4C 4C 1A 28 7A 6C 20 00 01 0A 01 EE

I haven't yet seen photographs of the PCBs these dumps came from, so I can't yet verify if there's any weird situation like Knight Rider where extra banks were added at the start.

Edit: I've found that Volleyball was an overdump (8 KB CHR mirrored up to 16 KB). The hash and size information for it above has been corrected.

Exciting stuff, thank you for sharing and thanks to RetroGE. What exactly is the difference with FamicomBox and FamicomStation cartridges? Shell color? I never could see any identifying markings.

Yeah, FamicomStation carts are gray instead of black. They also use the standard (I think?) mold, which does not say SSS V-2 on the back.

It's good to see that Super Chinese 2 is as expected too. It's been claimed that the FamicomBox/Station carts can't use the IRQ line (despite each cartridge connector having a pin for it), but presumably this game wouldn't work without it.
