Grid floor tech demo

Post by tepples »

Today, after seeing some artwork of stereotypical 80s perspective grid design in the Discord server, I decided to try my hand at animating a scrolling grid. It's not quite mode 7, but it's convincing nonetheless.

Think what you could do with this with 2 PPUs. Seicross definitely comes to mind.

I found the image generator that Twitter users had been using to make meme images resembling 1980s TV show titles: Retro Wave
Retro Wave &quot;Four KB NROM Grid Intro&quot;<br />(Not a screenshot but an example of the aesthetic found elsewhere.)
Retro Wave "Four KB NROM Grid Intro"
(Not a screenshot but an example of the aesthetic found elsewhere.)
Because "4K intro" is a recognized category in the scene, I made a CHR RAM port so that I could compress the CHR data using PB53. Code and data ended up fitting in 3K at $F400-$FF9F, provided someone doesn't golf it down even more.

It's always interesting to see what you can do with hand calculated timing when there's no actual game to worry about. Pretty cool
