2A03 cover of "Sonic the Hedgehog 3 - Competition Menu"

Post by Individualised »

Not sure if this is the right place for this (please remove if not) but I recently made a cover of the competition menu theme from Sonic 3 and I was looking for feedback on how it sounded and tips that might help me to make better sounding 2A03 songs. The cover is 2A03-only, no expansion chips, and this is the first FamiTracker (more specifically, Dn-FamiTracker) module I've published. It took me around an hour to track - I had made a cover of this song a while ago, but I lost the file and never uploaded it anywhere, but it was not too dissimilar from this version.

I think some slow decaying volume envelopes could benefit from being less linear. The NES volume steps are linear, so stepping through them in a linear path sounds to me, unnaturally loud. Compare Dragon Quest 1 to 2,3,4. DQ1 uses the hardware volume envelopes, has the same kind of effect.

Good idea. It would be more accurate to the original song as well.

In case anyone is interested, I uploaded my second 2A03 cover: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eoSmGCwH8VY This one was a bit harder to track as it wasn't based on a chiptune this time, and I'm not too satisfied with the result so maybe I'll redo it eventually. I won't post links here in the future as to not spam so you'll have to check my YouTube page if I upload more (hope that this post is okay at least).
