The Huns - Phase two - beta testers needed :D

Post by v.depatie »

So they are four playable level. Enjoy :D

This is the beginning of a new phase in my project; So I made a SEPARATE thread intentionally.

The base of my engine Is done.
I made the whole thing: sound engine, dynamic collision detection , controller, bref; The whole thing

Pure ASM cc65 ca65. Thanks for everyone help, I didn't know asm before last year november ( I was trained in C years ago).

I'm asking everyone who can to try the game ( mesen or fceux compatible ) to try get to the first boss in the village sky. I need feeback after that.
huns_cart - beta test 1 four level up.nes
Was it to hard?
Is the first boss mecanics okay? Any advices?

Ty !

For all the beta testers out there, ty in advance and:

The feather give you the ability to do a LATE jump. Not a double jump. I didnt make it clear in the game, intentionally. Should I be more specific with the player?
RECORDING FEATHER JUMP....mp4
There is a rock you can break with your special attack with the sword. Follow the old man instructions. Did you manage to get to level 2 ? Are the hints ok ?

Go to the village SKY to enjoy the first BOSS ( there is no teleporter in level 4 meaning level 4 you get stuck ).

Oh , and UP+SELECT is the use button, or DOWN+SELECT. to got through doors, teleporters.

Please , send me screen shots if you reach the sky. Is it to hard to figure out alone ?

For programmers:

I can share any modules of my code shall you need and/or explain how I did (sound engine, collision, scrolling, work ram updates, vram updates, bank switching. MMC3 or not ( I'm now very confortable with MMC3 mapper) For anyone who needs, I hope to get your requests. I will help you.

I want to help with existing projects. Please pm me if you need help for something

Congrats on your project so far!

I gave it a shot, but I struggled a lot tbh. I have no idea what is happening, and there is a lot of stuff flying around, and following the player constantly. I could not get beyond the first screen.

I think you would benefit a lot from thinking about pacing a lot more. This is a lot of stuff happening right away, and it is hard to get a sense of what the game is.

If I am being completely honest though, I think this style of game might be a little out of reach for you right now, just based on what I am seeing. I don't know anything about your background, so I hope that isn't too harsh, but I suspect you might benefit a lot from doing something much more simple first (pong, tetris, breakout, etc). There is a lot of improvement needed here to be a playable game imo.

Edit: I just saw that this game has other threads and has been in development for some time, and has quite a bit of context I didn't see, so take my advice with a grain of salt. I'll leave my original impressions, since you asked for feedback and it might be useful to get that feedback from someone seeing the game for the first time.

I don’t always have popular opinions, but let me tell you what I think about v.depatie’s game.

The game is 100% original homebrew, made by someone who is learning to program the NES. When you play it, you can feel that, and you draw many connections with other games. I feel like the people who made Super Mario World for NES (I.e. hummer team), they were on the same wavelength with v.depatie. It gives us some really cool insight we may have never seen.

And OK, you start playing the game and you don’t know what to do. Everything happens at once and it’s not like a game we’ve played before. I can see that and I agree with that comment but I don’t think that is automatically a bad thing. A bad thing would be if this was just a boring copy of something else, another Tetris or Mario knockoff or something. This is unique.

I remember playing Zelda 1 as a 3rd or 4th grader. I had no idea what to do. Just walking around, bad guys flying around everywhere, I’m seeing different landscapes, items I can get, and I am trying to understand, what is the point, what am I trying to do?? After lots of trial and error, I discover a dungeon, the music is different, there are keys, etc. At most points in time, I was struggling and I had no earthly idea what to do or where I was headed. V.depatie’s game captures that and it has all of the genuine quirkiness that we always try to eliminate with our modern knowledge, but deep down, we know we love those jagged edges, when we can imagine, and now see, the passion that made them. So this is why I believe his work is special and I want to keep reading every update we can get from him.
