I recently ordered a set of chips for some experiments, among them, a Rockwell R65C02. I was just looking for a CPU and some memories and didn't notice the specific variant, but according to the datasheet, this CPU not only has all the CMOS additions but Rockwell put in some other stuff too that wound up not being compatible with WDC's later stuff.
In any case, my first project is just going to get the thing to do stuff to an LED or 7-seg reliably, but I found myself curious if anyone has attempted dropping one of these in an NES and writing some stuff to take advantage of the extra bits, if that's even possible?
R65C02 "NES" Projects?

You can absolutely swap out the CPU for anything else, but very little existing software will deal without OAMDMA.

Well and I suppose a missing APU would be a bit of a bummer...

Should be fun playing games without sprites or sound!
