Microsoft Virtual PC

Post by WedNESday »

I just installed Windows 98 on this, but of course I can't get any graphics drivers for my NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT that work with Windows 98. The most recent Windows 98 drivers were for the 5xxx series but they wouldn't install. What can I do?

(I also have a SoundBlaster X-Fi and will need drivers for those too :()

Since when does Virtual PC require that the guest OS have drivers for the host hardware?

Sound, video, network, etc are emulated in virtual machines, as they do not have access to your actual hardware. Plus, Micro$oft sucks! Try VMWare or VirtualBox (free/open source) instead.

Anyway, whatever VM software you use, you gotta look up what kind of hardware it emulates, and hunt those drivers down. Some are usually provided by the software itself. VMWare calls it's pack "VMWare tools" and VirtualBox calls it's "Guest additions" I think. I don't know about VirtualPC these days, because I only used it before Micro$oft bought it. The 1st VirtualPC version that carried Micro$oft's name f*cked up my PC really good, so I never used it again.
